what Tachometer will work with a vertex mag without a tack drive.
the only ones I have found are from autometer clubman series and they are to expensive and don't even look all that good. the mag has a internal coil. is there anything that will git a reading from a plug wire. any help would be appreciated ... Thank You

50 years ago I simply used a Zener diode SW with a Joe Hunt Vertex. A quick look doesn't seem
like anything easy came up.....however magnetic pickup style tachs (diesel) are pretty abundant

We run Sun tach's with the transmitter box that says "Mag" on it. I have added some examples on ebay. They are restorable and a company I think the name is Williamson can convert the box to transistor. http://www.williamsons.com/Tachometers.php they did ours and it works great.

I have a tach here that I used when I had a mag. But it is for a 6 cylinder engine. I can look for it if you want.

We finally had a tach drive added to our base cause most tack companies today had nothing and the control boxes I heard about work but around $350 it was easier to run the cable tach

Yeah I could not get it to work. As I said earlier I found a Sun tach and had a new face put in it to the red line I wanted then had the box transistorized and I don't think I have $450. in total. And it is exactly what My MG had in it in the 60's. I have a Vertex mag and had a spare with the tach drive cable on it and I didn't like the way it looked or the cable going through the fire wall.

Autometer "used" to have one of their race style, 5" tachs. for the Vertex.
I had one in my Anglia.

Odd. Mine worked extremely well with no problems. Yours was probably either defective or improperly wired.

    thanks,
I ask about the Auto Meter converter because I've been wanting to swap the oil and water gauges in my firewall to this 2-1/16" tach and vacuum set.
'don't want to spend a hundred bucks on something that may not work..

I do have another magneto with a tach drive but I don't want to use a big tach

I have done it 2 ways : 1. Signal converter as suggested 2. The P (pulse terminal ) on the Alt to drive a pulse drive tach . Auto Meter has a sending unit that clamps on the OD of the Alt , I have used on a few diesels that works good but it takes adjusting to calibrate it correctly . It seems to work find throughout the RPM range when correctly calibrated

a tach drive cable would be the easy way to go ... do you still have the tach drive part ... a cable through the firewall wouldn't bother me

I've a tach in my '82 diesel..runs off either the lower pulley or the crank balancer (been ages since I looked)..just a strobe. Seems like that would work too?

W6RAT I got rid of it a long time ago. There are plenty for sale on ebay though, I get the reminder all the time. Just remember "easiest is not always best".
