1962 RAMBLER AMERICAN SEDAN WITH CHRISTMAS SURFBOARDS

    Hello,

The Christmas Winter season always gives me the memory of “wanting to surf” rather big waves in the Hanalei Bay area. The stories we heard were that those big bay waves got really large and were rideable for quite some distance. They were big, but not as scary as those Waimea Bay waves on Oahu’s North Shore that we saw in the surf movies. We were not there in the winter season, but happen to hit a few, big swells coming in from outside, during a couple of summer swells. They were a foot or two overhead and lined up well.

Back then, as twenty somethings, we were always on the lookout for something of a challenge. We thought (as many twenty somethings do) we were ready to challenge the world and do some fun things while we were at it. Our itinerary included traveling, concerts, different beaches, Europe, photography and now surfing in Hawaii. These waves satisfied that part of the choices.

A few blocks from the old Hanalei covered pier.

After our big summer month of vacation, surfing, and totally enjoying Kauai at its best, we were back home looking forward to the winter months of cold, but bigger surf. Perhaps, there was the thought of going back to Hawaii for the winter swells? We were told that one of the huge ocean surges in the winter took this Rambler American sedan and lifted it up while it was parked under the house. The big winter swells, the storms, high tide surges just rolled into the land and the homes.

Our friend had built the houses on telephone poles driven into the ground. Underneath the house was a 7 foot tall space for storage or in this case, cars. The big surge that came ashore literally lifted the car until the roof hit the bottom of the house. The water receded quickly and no damage was done to the car other than a few little bruises. It was a tough, American built car…

We never saw the 4 door-Rambler American sedan, again, after that month-long, summer vacation in Kauai. We had sold/gave our share of the car to our friend (for allowing us to stay for a month…) and he kept it for several more years.

Took the Indian saw blade to work and sold it instantly. Then got three more holiday commission pieces. Now I'm collecting old saws to paint. Gary SAWS-1.jpg SAWS-2.jpg

And now one with a little color to pop the image and give it some 'age', these were shot at the November El Mirage meet.
