Just saw this browsing the web... Background, History and more photos ... https://jalopnik.com/the-oral-history-of-an-amazing-1930-ford-model-a-off-ro-1588212852 .
This vehicle has been around for ages and was on eBay several years ago with a huge sell price around $100k from memory. I always wondered how any gearing would work to turn such large diameter wheels with that small HP model A engine, especially in snow and mud. It is definitely iconic and one of a kind but really who would want it, it is rough and hardly practical these days IMHO...
These kinds of mods were common in the back country on rough roads, fording shallow creeks, etc.. There were also tracked systems that replaced the rear wheel drive, rotary screw drive, and skis in place of the front wheels. Like the T, there were literally thousands of add on parts, accessories and conversion kits to do just about anything from sawing wood to drilling post holes. Gary
Alot of rual mail carriers years back had conversations like that to get through the rough winter snow or mud covered roads...track conversations were also popular....RR's they are not.these things actually had a real purpose ...they usually built them out of parts they gathered off the old farm machinery ... basically a old tractor with a car body mounted on it ...or at least a truck rear end and trans for the low gearing ... multiple transmissions... I have even seen them with a tractor transmission rear axle combination mounted behind the engine then youcould even run your saw mill or whatever off of it...... What is really funny is the stock Ts and As are more offroad capable than most of the new 4wd junk on the road today.
I wonder if anybody has ever taken on Elephant Hill in Canyonlands outside of Moab or some of the other slickrock trails?
