After 8plus years, about a dozen trips from New York to Michigan, countless miles to other events and lots of cruising, I figured it was time to freshen up my Custom 56 Chevy ElCamino. While the 350 engine still runs great, the last couple of years it has decided to leave little puddles of motor and tranny oil whenever it sits still. I recently found a nice 350 with a 700R4 that I will be installing. A friend from when we had our salvage yard came over and in less than 2hrs we had the old 350 out. Now comes the clean up. We will also be installing new tubular control arms and a new steering column. The old engine and tranny is going to the young son of one of our car club members who wants to learn how to rebuild it with his Dad and eventually install it in a car they will be building together.

Did that treatment were you spray the rusty headers with Slip Plate dry lubricant. So easy and looks great.

Finally finished a week of hauling and spreading gravel, the mud got so bad I couldn't get the car in and out of the shop I'm converting into my garage.
I'm officially too old for this sh*t.

Got the rockers off, pushrods and lifters out, and replaced the valve seals. I think two or three of them weren’t destroyed. Next I need to have a look at the camshaft lobes. The lifters don’t look damaged on the tappet side, so I’m thinking that the cam is probably ok. Need to find out if the lifters are bad, though. Some move freely, others are solid, maybe stuck?

Went to a local junkyard and found a trans that I am going to use in my sunliner,it was driven in the yard about 15 years ago and the fluid is good and red with no signs of water so I am going to take a chance on it and use it as is. I will get it when it warms up some.

I had sent the original heater core in for a recore since it was leaking. Received it back (the same size as I sent it - the aftermarket parts were about a 1/3rd of the size - no thanks), installed and took it for a cruise in about 25 degree weather but I was nice and warm inside! Best part of my day!

Have a good friend with 2 of those 64 GTO's , I have made both of them run and drive mechanically, but he never took them any further. Never understood that. :(

That’s interesting. I rebuilt this one mechanically and installed a new interior but left the exterior alone for now. I drive it as much as I can but we are building a large man-cave for our cars and the business and I need my truck often to haul stuff. I know my wife wants to finish the exterior but I’d prefer to leave it alone as long as I can and just make it faster. Collecting the parts for a period correct 389 tripower currently. No power steering or brakes, just a comfortable old hot rod. Hope your friend enjoys them at least. They will pry the keys out of my cold dead fingers for this one...Randy

  27. While I'm not into Lexus ball bearing panel gap; the fit of my friend's Nottingham grille left something to be desired. Enjoyed looking at it for while; then had to start cutting. Gotta cut some more off tomorrow and start putting it together again.
