That’s a little fellow ! I had one years ago from a Crosley that I used in mini pulling tractor , it probably was 1/2 that size . Looked near the same no tail shaft .

 

I like it.
Could use it to shift gears on a swap meet shopping cart, as it looks light enough.
More details please.

 

You can keep an extra in your glove box just in case. Nice.

 

Won't need a tranny jack for that one.

Last month the tranny spit out this....

 

I found that 1960 tranny from a Rambler American and plan on replacing the input shaft with my present tranny as the American is 3/4 to long in the nose and too wide in diameter.

 

Removed the countershaft this morning and fished these out of the transmission case.

 

This one I pulled from my 50 Studebaker Champion Starlight Coupe....worked great ..it is small... I also have a over drive unit ...it's a little crusty..but I think it would clean up...the trans worked great but it's a little dirty.... I don't need it ...if your in the area..Oregon ...come by and get it .....it's yours....Ho...Ho...Freakin ....Ho...and back to Rambling you go....

wow, that is one nasty looking tranny! Northwest Transmission in Ohio may have parts if you need any.

 

Got my small parts kit today in the mail. Input and output bearings are on the way.

 

When I examined the parts that came out of the countershaft I noticed there were no washers holding the needle roller bearings in. Could that be the reason it self destructed?

 

How small is small???.....

HA! when I saw this thread, before I even read it, in the list I immediately thought "T96"! (then I saw the first pic with those unmistakable door handles...) I've had more than my share of them. behind flathead sixes "you don't hear many complaints" but even then few compliments. the Rambler overhead 6, all 195.6 cubic inches of terror, break them.

I don't even mind the no synchro first, I'm used to that. but it's a weak piece of junk.

the only good thing about it is that the T14 three speed (AMC had a passenger car version, with side shifter) has the same clutch shaft, spline, length, and at least two bolts the same (often all four). different length. anyone wants a nicely rebuilt T14 with 5000 miles on it lemme know.

Modern Drivelines makes an adapter to bolt a T5 to a T96 bell. I'm driving on one. it's great.

What's interesting is the same Rambler, the automatic transmission although push-button shared design with 57-58 Ford and was used in some later Willys and Studebaker applications. I'd presume it looks huge next to that manual box. Or at least, some Motors manuals cover the transmissions in the same section.


I've always thought an enterprising guy could make a pushbutton Edsel that actually worked like it's supposed to with the right combination of parts.

 

Is the gear machined to accept a washer? If so, I bet they are suppose to be there. Can you locate a tranny breakout diagram? That should show all the parts in the tranny. Also, there is a clearance spec on the counter shaft thrust washers. Often the case is worn allowing way too much thrust travel. In the Olds trannies this clearance is around 12 thousands. Might want to check this on assembly.

 

Jeeps, Scouts, Ramblers, Studebakers, Henry J's all used them.

 

Boy, would I love that for a spare. I wish I was in Oregon right now.

 

I have the 1958 tech service manual. Yup, there are supposed to be a retaining washer on the outside ends of the bearing stacks. Whoever rebuilt this last time omitted the washers.

 

I would love a stronger transmission but don't have the wherewithal to remove the torque tube setup for a leaf spring exchange.

 

I have a tans out of a 63 Volvo that is tiny.If you took the shifter off it would fit into a lunch box.
