    Tom Beatty (belly tank) Lakester

    Hello,

We lived near several sources of parts from aircraft surplus yards. There was the big, Douglas Aircraft “Surplus” Yard on Carson St. and several yards on Cherry Avenue. But, near our Westside of Long Beach house, some of the Wilmington surplus yards had unusual parts, like belly tanks from old war planes. How they ended up there, we never knew. They just looked like bombs that would be launched from the huge multi-engine planes during the wars.

The stories in the old Hot Rod Magazines gave us plenty of ideas, but being locked into an enclosed compartment was like riding around in a Flash Gordon Rocket Ship with “Ming, The Merciless” chasing us. So, we just drew the belly tank shapes and race cars. No enclosures in the future for us. It just seemed too confining.

But, they did look fast with the total streamlining. We even tried making some out of clay with our 1/25 plastic model kit wheels attached. It looked like a chubby, hot dog with a pointed tail. HA! While the paint dried, the clay dried, cracked, and broke, so that got tossed out. It did look good for a awhile, after we were finished with it, though.

"Running on alcohol, the Lakester made its debut at the 1951 Bonneville Nationals, laying down an impressive 188.284 mph run. This not only gave the car bragging rights as the fastest open-wheeled car at Bonneville, but also solidified the freshly-built belly tank car as the fastest Lakester ever built at the time."

"After his impressive run in late 1951, Beatty had Belond Exhaust come on as a sponsor, fitting the car with a new exhaust system. The car was also dubbed the Belond Equa-Flow Special, and received a fresh red and white paint scheme. It also received a new aluminum fairing fabricated by race car builder, Frank Kurtis of Kurtis-Kraft Company fame.”

Changes in 1958 included adding a supercharged Olds for more power.

“In 1958, with his own shop established, Beatty switched the powerhouse of the Lakester to a 303 ci Oldsmobile V8. The engine was de-stroked to 260 ci, and fitted a modified GMC 6-71 supercharger with a custom, cast blower manifold and drive. It was topped with six Stromberg 48 carburetors, and the combination made a reported 400 horsepower."

"Now painted two-shades of blue with Beatty’s company name “Tom Beatty Automotive Engineering” emblazoned on the side, the Lakester set a Bonneville D Lakester Class record of 232.98 mph. In 1959, Beatty set another new Bonneville D Lakester Class record by running 239.38 mph, as well as a new SCTA dry lake record of 212.26 mph on a shortened course.”

"The car was sold in 2007 by Gooding & Company for $440,000, and then again in 2009, at the height of the country’s economic recession, by RM Auctions for $209,000."

image.jpg We've been busy here on the ranch getting ready for Christmas. The kids are coming over the mountain this year and the trailboss wants it to be "magical!" So here's an older pen and ink study I did of a depot hack.
