Projects 270 Poly engine is finally rebuilt

...only one word for it...'spectacular'...

 

If I owned an old Mopar or was wanting to build a Mopar powered hot rod I would use one of these engines.
To me they are cooler than a Hemi. I know they are not nearly as powerful but they have a great look and you seldom see them anymore .
Very nice job it looks like is just came down the assembly line.

We used to get these in the shop on a regular basis, worked on a lot of them.
Sanitary engine, can be tuned easily...smoother factory balance than anything else of the period.
I used to make those things idle so smooth the driver would gnash the starter, thinking it had died!

Also thought those would make great exposed hot rod engines...the valve covers are 'mezmorizing'...

I have built many T-buckets and all had SBC engines but this one would look good as you say in an exposed engine vehicle like a T-bucket.

 

That looks beautiful- it really needs to go in an open engine bay so people can appreciate something different.
I've got 2 later poly 318's in open engine bays, one in a T-bucket and one in a 32-5 window. Most folk don't know what they are and think they're SBC cos the dissy's at the back!

 

Very nice, these beautiful ol Poly's are work horses. I blazed my 56 Suburban wagon all over the country with its orig mill.

There wasn't that much difference in HP, the 1956 331 Chrysler Windsor poly with 4 barrel was 250HP, the same block with hemi heads in the 55 New Yorker was.... 250HP.

In hopped up or racing form the larger exhaust valve and better combustion chamber shape of the hemi would give an advantage but in stock form there wasn't much between them.

Road tester Tom McCahill rated the Windsor "Best Buy" in the medium price class in 1956 and stated that the Polysphere Windsor would run neck and neck with the Hemi powered New Yorker up to 80MPH, then the better breathing Hemi would pull ahead.

 

Sweet - Running yet? I see you posted a wanted ad for a push rod. I would think that could be bought new at NAPA. Got a new Melling for my 318 Poly at AutoZone.... And an adjuster screw at National gathering dust on the shelf....

Just had one of those plastic fuel filters crack and leak after a few hundred miles - under the floor on my COE. Luckily while idling in the garage I noticed a puddle on the garage floor - although that could have been castastrophic for both truck and garage. Changed all cars over to metal housing filters after that....

 

What's with the side mounts? If that is a 270 Red Ram they did not have the cast in motor mounts - the only low block with the cast in ears was the 1956 Plymouth 259 poly. I think they went to sidemounts on the Dodge engines with the Raised Block 315 didn't they?

Dodge Hemi intakes interchange with the polys - that Weiand 4 x1 intake with 4 97s sitting in my garage would look killer on that engine - hmmmm....

 

It may bee so that Dodge 270 poly-56 got sidemounts.
They use the 270 poly in the Coronet series in 56.

 

that's a sweet build. motors like these always make me wish i had room for a collection of old motors sitting on stands, just for the eye candy

the parts guy at my local NAPA was telling me they don't even carry plastic ones any more

I have a set ,almost, of 7 pistons for a 259 or 270 poly, .030 over factory pistons that need a home.

My 270 has no side motor-mounts, just a funky front mount on the waterpump housing!

 

I know this is an old thread but my 270 Poly (with side engine mounts) is about to be fired up for the 1st time soon. @73RR did all the hard work to get higher compression pistons in there and convert to adjustable rockets. I found an old set of chrome valve covers! I think that's a Hot Heads Dodge Hemi valley cover beneath the Offy 4bbl intake. Running a 390 Holley.

Sanderson headers took their Dodge hemi manifolds and fitted them up to a set of Poly flanges I sent them. When she's all buttoned up on the run stand, I will share more pics.

Please tell me you are not going to run that air cleaner. As long as we are hawking parts I have a NOS set of .060 over 270 poly Pistons

 

Getting closer but the Hot Heads accessory brackets are not the look I wanted. Stuck with them because I need A/C and P/S. This is gonna be the wife's

Intake back on. Distributor is in! Sort of. This is a 440 housing. Small block distributor vacuum advance is on the other side. Pulls opposite direction.
