Technical Oh crap, now what ?

Nothing is ever easy!
Simple axle seal phone call shows up with an axle that fits in the bearing much like a hotdog fits in a hallway and then this lock bolt leaves 3/4 of itself in the hole thru the crosspin

I have had some luck with a small pick working it back out.

 

It’s been a long time since I had a gm diff apart but this is that stupid long pin bolt deal that ALWAYS breaks.... corrrect?

Had luck in the past sometimes blowing air through an air gun with a rubber tip so you get a good seal on the hole, the air works itself around the remainder of the pin and pushes out towards you a bit, then you can wedge it out with two small screw drivers on either side or grab it with a pair of small needle nose and wiggle it out.this works only if it breaks off all the threads and all that is left is the pin part.

Or get an aviation grade 12” drill bit in the size required ( brafssco sells them about 12 bucks each)
You need a long flexible drill bit so you can drill out the Center of the pin in the middle , but the drill bit has to “bend” around the housing( if you understand what I’m getting at) then drill and tap in a small extractor and out it comes.

Usually they break off at the threads and all your left with is the pin part.

Might get lucky with a Dremel tool and a small burring tool, cut a groove and use a screwdriver.


Either way it’s a big pain in your left ball easy or not it sucks, as Bluto said in animal house “ now is when you start drinking heavily”

just remember to use gloves to keep the oily shavings from getting embedded in your hand.

 

Had that happen in a stock car many years ago. If I recall, we very carefully tacked a piece of welding rod to it and pulled it out.

 

Worked one out with a sharp pick..whew ...surprised it came out easy..

 

I’ve stuck a welding rod to the end to get them out....I’ve also had to torch the pinion pin out to get them apart. Good luck, I’m sure you will have no trouble.

Yup, that sucks. Ford 8.8 is the same way, broke them on my work van replacing axle bearings. You might try to find a metal compass or divider and use it like a spanner wrench. You can walk them out, if patient.

 

Place punch on crosspin
Strike punch with hammer
Crosspin can now fall out
Removing renaming bits of crosspin bolt

 

I don't think there is a place for the end of the bolt to go.

 

The first one I broke I was going crazy. (In my mid 20s).
My uncle, a much more experienced and patient person, used a punch and 1 hammer blow. The pin was able to fall out. The hit sheared the other side of the retaining bolt.
The remnants of the bolt fell out
He fixed in less than a miniute what I spent hours on.

 

I pushed it out because I had bigger fish to fry.
You're saying striking the crosspin will shear the remnant of the lock bolt?

 

I just broke a carrier trying to shear one off on an 8.8, which is the same basic design. There is tool made for it. I didn't find out until I dicked mine all up.

drill a small hole in the carrier at the blind end of the broken bolt and use your air gun to blow it out,by blowing in the small hole you drilled.

 

I always found one thread on the end of the retrieved piece.

 

Ok, It's out
I talked to my buddy Terry at Henderson driveline in Westlake, Ohio.

He said they always break with 1 thread left on it and that 1 thread needs to fight its way back out.

He hooked me up with 3 little tools and a new bolt. 1st is a Allen drive cap screw with a center hole drilled thru it. 2nd was a 12" long flexible drill bit, and third was an easy out.
The cap screw pinches the broken part and centers the drill bit. The flexible bit lets the whole thing work. Then it's up to the operator to not break the easy out.
Took about 10 mins to do and that bitch fought hard coming out.

Cool that you got it out without a monster fight. The last one that I worked that had a broken pin the spider pin had wallowed out the hole in the carrier to the point it wasn't usable any more. It could have been that the pin broke first though.
