Alright thanks for clearing that up for me. It won't make a difference just like you said. That's cool you don't mess with automatics. I would prefer a manual trans. The toploader 3 speed I can get my hands on next time I get paid is from "64 to 72", is that a good candidate?

Someone on the Packard forum told me my moter was not a Packard engine but rather a Clipper engine. Do you know what that's about?

Don't worry about what he said. It's a Packard weather it came in a Packard 400 or a Clipper or a Hudson or a Studebaker Golden Hawk. People get all in a bunch about small stuff. Yes the trans you can get is a good choice

Ok thanks. Wow, I'm gonna go ahead purchase that first being I can get it for 80$ with the linkage, bellhousing, and clutch. I didn't know it was a good candidate. I know people like 4speeds. But I don't care as long as I'M shifting.

If you get that engine running and the trans turns out to be good, I'd just run it. Sure stick is nice, but the Ultramatic shifts nice and is a good trans as long as everything is working properly. Sounds like you're on a budget and the trans swap is going to be pricey and involved, I don't think I'd start buying up parts for a trans swap until I knew that original trans was shot.

  11. I suppose you could make an aluminum plate that bolts to the back of the block, and then trim away a GM case to where you could weld the two together at the proper length and centerline. Not a cheap or easy proposition.
Don't forget. Then you'd have to "adapt" the torque converter, flex plate, and starter.

    Good point.
I'm gonna need the shift linkage that connects up to the engine from the ultramatic though because mine is missing.

Sorry I was asking if after you weld the transmission to the aluminum plate will they be bonded as one unit and unserviceable

  16. The plate would BOLT to the engine.

If u have the ultramarine trans and it's whole. The linkage is a bit complex but I have one together and can send u pics. Those transmissions from 51-54 packard automatic r very tough. I found affordable source for seal kit as mine leaked. But works purrfect. W just 104000. MI on it n parts needed renewed. I know it was drove very hard indeed.

MT = manual trans not Mickey Thompson. Packard made manual trans available with that engine so, the best and cheapest way to go would be to buy the Packard bellhousing clutch etc and use that. Also a used distributor. There are electronic ignition conversions from Pertronix or you can use a Ford thick film ignition module with the stock points.

The parts you want are not very rare or hard to find in Packard circles. Here is where you find the real gone Packard fans, they can help you.
