I remember an article from a mid-sixties R&C. To make a frenched antenna, a used shock absorber was cut apart for the tube housing. Location picked, hole cut, then tube welded in and finished, either with a piece of 3/16 bar for a lip or just flush. the antenna fit perfectly in the tube. drill and insert a small tube with hose for water drainage.

I’ve always been a fan of the sunken antennas. Thank you for posting the “how to”

Jeff Myers has a kool sunken antenna addiction. Here is one from his ‘57

I like the sci-fi look, so made this for my Merc using the base from a late 50's Merc antenna. 2.jpg image3.jpg 4_edited.jpg

One of those small touches that can make a difference in the looks of any car. If the antenna or it's location is wrong, it can mess with the flow of the rest of the car.

Running dual frenched antenna's on Miss Taboo. I've always liked the look of them on customs, not usually a complicated modification, but can really add nice touch.

They are also kind of a overlooked mod, although this past summer I was asked a lot about the frenched antenna's at the few shows the car got to as now its something not seen very often at most weekend car shows.

Thanks for the nice comment on my Beam Me Up Scotty article on Custom Car Chronicles. It was fun researching and writing it.

Voodoo Jim owns this bad Buick. One of my favorite antenna treatments.

It's all in the details! I really liked these from Dreddybear's model A coupe. 20181110_113305_HDR.jpg I plan on running dual antennas on my '57 f100 custom shop truck, something similar to this:

Anyone that had one frenched or custom and short care to chime in on how good the reception was.

  18. I've had quite a few frenches on a few cars over the years and reception is ok. FM is livable, but AM can be hit or miss. Unfortunately I've never had as much luck with AM reception as with the factory antenna locations (on the fender top, roof, etc).

That being said I though I'd post a few that I've installed myself. A few of the cars aren't HAMB friendly so I cropped the photos down to show just the french and antenna. Hope that's ok.

  19. I was going to try to get all the pictures in one post, but I thought it was getting a little long, so I'll finish up in a second post.

This set of pictures was from this last summer's 38th Leadsled Spectacular (2018). E

    Custom Chevy

This Pontiac used to belong to Dennis McPhail, but I'm not sure if he still owns it.

And last but certainly not least, is our own @straykatkustoms survivor Mercury. This car is one of my favorite Mercs not only because it's a sweet sled, but because of how hard Mick has worked to bring it back from the butcher job that it was. I thought I'd post a picture of his cool antenna because I think he's too humble to post one himself. Here's to you Mick! E
