Can you believe this is still flying.

 

One would tend to think that with a hole in the prop that big it would vibrate as out of balance and probably wouldn't run to long. More Modern A10's will take punishment like those two above and also keep going. Scary when you get out, stand on the ground beside it and look at them.

 

Hi Warhorseracing.There are many instances during WW2 where single radial powered AC came home just fine with 2 to 3 complete cylinder assys missing.Some P47`s to be exact.Not to mention the light, medium and heavy bombers.That holey prop blade would be a bit noisy to listen to but it got the pilot home just fine Make a neat keep sake for the pilot.

The airplane is a DI Fokker, designed and first flown in 1917. This one is probably a reproduction as most are. Only a very few of the 320 DI built survived the war.

 

Hombre there used to be a museum between you and Gadsden that had quite a few WW1 acft. All replicas.

Some very cool stuff on here....my brother just got his hands on these two vintage Stearman bi-plane window's...he found them in a loft covered with straw in a barn that he was cleaning out in preparation for a estate sale that he was doing......to bad the rest of the plane wasn't hanging from the rafters........

Saw this story today. Alastiar ''Sandy'' Gunn's Spitfire, AA810 has been found and the remains recovered from a Norwegian peat bog. The plane was stripped of it's guns and armor, large fuel tanks installed. This was in preparation for a very long range recon mission to photograph the battleship Tirpitz's location. Gunn parachuted to safety after German pilots intercepted and shot him down. he was captured, and ended up in Stalag Luft III. Made his escape, depicted in the movie ''The Great Escape''. Recaptured and executed along with others from the prison camp. This plane will be restored. Well, parts of it will be used to reconstruct an operational Spitfire.

 

Some members of a museum I volunteer at are doing a great job in rebuilding (static display) a Fairy Battle.. only four left in the world... the empanage has been completed, most of the centre fuselage is together, they guys are working on some of the control surfaces. A massive job. This is a pic looking at the starboard front...

We were graced by a fly past today by three AP3C Orions to both celebrate 50 years service with the RAAF and to also acknowledge their retirement from operational service, I spent 12 good years as a maintainer on these great birds... it is a little sad that they will no longer be in our skies...

COOL STUFF GUYS!
I've been an airplane freak since I was very small. My Dad was a B-24 nose gunner , 15th USAAF , 460th BG in Spinnozala Italy in WW2. He inspired me, plus I grew up with a small airport literally across the street! I devoured EVERYTHING on aviation I could read and see and still do!
My latest binge is the SAGE System, designed in the 50's, operational in the 60's. It's the Early Warning "Semi-Automated- Ground-Environment" System. You've seen it in old movies like Dr Strangelove. I always thought it was fictional movie stuff, but it wasn't. It was digital semi AI computing in the early 60's. They had touch screens, instead of a mouse, "pens" on a cord. INTERESTING STUFF!
So, if any of you coots were radar techs , geeks or fighter pilots etc.,or involved with SAGE in any way , please PM me if you have any stories or info!.

The inspiration and the end result

 

Clearly it isn't for me to say. How they go about this either by using a rebuildable Spitfire or from scratch. I'd prefer to see a replica built not using any of the parts shown here. Rather imagine both side by side. The original assembled much like a dinosaur skeleton in a museum next to the new built replica. This, again just me speaking aloud would honor Alastiar ''Sandy'' Gunn much better for his sacrifice.

The "Jug" was known for getting a guy home even when shot to hell. If you want to view a wonderful documentary might I suggest A Fighter Pilot's Story, Quentin Aaenson is the pilot [please note not of the plane pictured]. Talk about a humble hero!

My dad was a belly gunner on a B-24. That's him at the arrow, he took a bunch of nose art pictures in the South Pacific.
