Is this The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island? Can't be as they don't allow cars.

14462725_953413561430855_1059327777612200610_n.jpg Yes it is the Grand Hotel and cars are not allowed but money has a strange effect on greasing ones palms. I would bet that a donation may have been made to supply more manure carts by someone at GM when they were staying at the Governor's house next door.

Also cars were allowed for the movie "Somewhere in Time" so if it serves the Chamber of Commerce exceptions may be made.

Rootie, this first one is a great Big Car photo but I have no idea where it is or who the drivers are. Is there any info on this one?

And the second looks like it might be part of a Firestone tire test. I would guess at Bay Meadows in 1951. Freddie Agabashian is the driver in the Pat Clancy car and Agabashian did do tire tests around that time. That's Firestone boss Johnny Moore in the suit posing with Agabashian. And the dark haired guy 4th from the left in the Firestone overalls is Bill McCrary who became the Firestone racing tire boss after Moore retired.

    Thanks for posting!

Money has a way of making the impossible happen...Like The Grand Hotel being built in only 93 days.

This one features what my mate called "panhard shocks" and it must be said, very poor shackle angle.

The track is the Iowa St Fairgrounds, Des Moines, a 1953 IMCA race. The #19 car is west coast racer Clyde Palmer and the #9 car is another west coast driver Paul Kamm.

You'd be surprised at the hate mail I get. I don't get it. I don't get insulting a total stranger either, why?
I actually have many interests and hobbies, posting some of them here is just a by product of me being an amateur historian.
I collect pictures of cars and drag racing ( mostly ) to preserve the history of the sport from a non professional photographer standpoint. I just "share" some of them here on the HAMB because I enjoy it. I have maybe 20, 000 pics .
I have a decent WW2 library, have studied the Pacific war extensively, I'm trying to learn Japanese ( I'm very bad at picking up languages)> I like cooking, have my own garden:being retired I do housework while my wife still works. I dig old movies, have hundreds, collect car models , ( 600 plus), have a kick ass OT car I like. Enjoy collecting ghost stories and urban legends. I'm fascinated by the SAGE radar / early warning system of the 50's-60's am reading everything I can find. Am preparing my donation of my Dad's WW2 stuff (nose gunner B-24.) to a museum. My life is good.
Married 36 years to the greatest wife ever!
AND A BUNCH MORE! I have too many interests.
    I'm fine guys.

I don't owe ANY of you an explanation though, just thought you might be interested!

here's a photo I took with my instamatic, at Woodburn, ages ago.
John Mitchel's Jr Fuel car. He was also track announcer.

I'm going to for a short time. I'm sick of guys PM'ing me griping about what I post or following Ryan's rules!
I do not need this silly drama. Ryan and Mark have always been very good to me and totally down to earth and fair guys, this thread has been good for the HAMB, 44 million views is quite a lot. Good for traffic, they are just good guys.
Please don't PM me with complaints, I won't respond. Thanks for the compliment.
Look, I'm not trying to create MORE DRAMA, I'm just telling you so you won't think I'm dead or something! LOL

Anyone who sends you hate mail should be permanently banned. Make a list for the admin and let's get rid of them. I am older than you and an L.A. native and I find you posts very interesting. I am always hoping one of my friends or myself will show up in one of those old photos. Keep up the good work!

  24. OK thanks for the kind words, but lets start POSTING PICTURES!

OK, here you go. Caption on the picture says "Motor Vehicle, Hartford, CT". I'm trying to figure out what street this may be, based on the Travelers Tower in the background. Could be south of the Tower on Main Street, looking north.

A couple pics of Baltimore, 1960. The lower shot is the inner harbor, taken from about where the Science center stands today.
upload_2018-11-29_18-46-45.jpeg Similar angle today. Very built up and trendy now.

    You're the man Gary!
I can't imagine people sending you hate mail. That's just ridiculous, what a bunch of close minded losers.
Anyway, enjoy your break and I for one look forward to your return to posting.
