Winter Maintenance... Pulling my 471 Cragar blower off to get rebuilt, anyone have suggestions on reputable shop that deals w/ early blowers? I live in California ( Bay Area ), but would ship in order to get done correctly and in a timely fashion. Any suggestions would be appreciated....
It's not rocket surgery. You got the carb off, that is just about as complicated to do the rebuild. Bearings, seals, timing (and probably not timing, since it is already done), and set clearances. Rebuild kits are all over the internet. Long feeler gauges are out there, too. It takes the same kit as a 6-71. You can get a couple of pullers from O'Reily or Autozone, as a free rental.
Purrrrr'teee ! Dyers Blowers out of Chicago. Years of service. Great guys. Will sell you a rebuild kit .... feeler gauges ... and general directions ... just like Gimpy says .... or will turn key it all. Just mail it in. Gary Dyers may or may not answer the phone .... but if not the next generation will. His son has been a presence since birth. These dudes are the original GMC roots blower specialists. Traditions start here.
Hello, Your 471 set up looks very nice. In So Cal, one of the most famous, old time drag racers has a well-known reputation for quality work and products in this supercharger field. Don Hampton of Hamptonblowers.com The history speaks for itself and experience can be no less. It would be a nice road trip to So Cal, once the particulars are in place. https://www.hamptonblowers.com/donbio Don Hampton has an outstanding history in drag racing going back 60 years in So Cal. His work is above the rest as far as experience, work and knowledge. In the 1959-60 era, he drove some of the fastest FED race cars and competition coupes on the West Coast. (Eldon Dye's Competition Coupe, Kenny Lindley's Potvin 671, FED, etc.) Jnaki He was one of our favorite drivers from the early days of drag racing and filming at Lions, Riverside and Bakersfield. DYE HAMPTON COMP COUPE LINDLEY/HAMPTON FED SOUND “Even though Hampton retired from drag racing in 1984, he continues to thrive with his business Hampton Blowers, manufacturing blowers for street machines, dragsters and drag boats. With precision and expertise Don handles and inspects each product to always deliver the best! A true innovator, Hampton continuously develops new and more efficient blowers and is looking forward to celebrating over 60 years in the supercharger industry.” https://www.hamptonblowers.com/price including 4-71 kits: Regardless of price, The safety and quality, reliable work speaks for itself. P.S. If Hampton Blowers does not work out for you, there is another So Cal group that has a similar reputation for quality work. (Littlefield Blowers in Anaheim,CA. https://www.littlefieldblowers.com/) I went to high school with Mert Littlefield, who later became a great drag racer and supercharger developer. Mert is no longer with us, but his shop still puts out quality parts, applications and has a great history in the field. The shop is still in So Cal and it is a nice drive down the coast (or the inland freeways) from the Bay Area.
Jnaki - This is a huge help and I really appreciate it. Thanks again, and I’ll post pics as she goes back together ...
