After my mother passed I had to go through some items she had stored away. I came upon these sketches I did somewhere around 1963 or so. I would have been 11 or 12 years old then.

The 2nd one is enlarged engine of 1st pic.

Today I can't draw a straight line with a ruler.

I realize that these do NOT represent any artistic talent, but posted them to show y'all where a junior high boy's mind was when he was supposed to be listening to the teacher. Yes, as I recall I did these in class one day.

These are three photos showing sections of the old Paramount Race Track at Paramount
Ranch that fell victim to one more unfortunate and tragic California fire.

Hamber @Cyclone Kevin some time ago acquired a vintage former Dry Lakes Hotrod (The Clem Waske Roadster) and has done a heck of a lot of research and part searching to bring it back from the pieces he received and continues to assemble it into a faithful salute to its former glory...I took one of his recent pics around his shop and pushed it forward a little to provide some inspiration not that it was really needed...and here's what I came up with...

So if you haven't visited Kevin's build I truly encourage you to do so as its a very interesting story
of an Awesome Hotrod and it's meandering journey through Hotrod Hands.

    Hello,
One of my favorite Willys Gas Coupes was from the famous Grist Brothers. Drawing the chopped version of any Willys was a difficult proposition. Kudos to those who did it on the real thing and made it look fabulous. We saw them weekly in the Lions Dragstrip pits and race track. Our connection with the Grist Bros. goes back unexpectedly to August 13, 1960.

Eddy Grist’s dad’s A/Gas chopped Willys just made a run prior to our C/Gas final elimination race at 9:00 p.m. that night. They were on the Lion Dragstrip return road after the run and were the closest people to the explosion, resulting fire, and the crash of our 40 Willys 671 SBC C/Gas coupe into the spectator’s side fence.

Last year at the June 2017 Lions Dragstrip Museum opening event, I talked to the author/editor of the “So Cal Thunder, When Lions Roared”… book. He was a 19 year old in the spectator stands all day, watching our Willys race and win against all opponents. He was impressed. But, at that 9:00 P.M. final race, he described the huge clutch explosion, sparks under the Willys, a ball of fire racing through the cab and out of the windows. Then he saw the driver door open, more flames following and something falling.

The last vision was the 40 Willys veering toward the spectator’s fence burning and stopping, finally, wedged into the fence with flames coming out of all windows and doors. He will never forget that sight and was giving me chills as he was describing the series of events that took place right in front of where he was sitting. He said he saw us trying to put out the flames with extinguishers, to no avail…(my brother had jumped out past the traps going about 60mph.)

The dragstrip security staff just let the flames burn itself out as they closed the dragstrip early for the night. Atts Ono stayed with the Willys until everything was secured for the night.

It has been 58 years, but that Lion’s Dragstrip event still stands out in my mind and in talking with Eddy, this is an excerpt from the HAMB post.

I have talked to Eddy Grist of the Grist Family. As a young kid, he was on the return road with his family, after his dad had just made a run in A/Gas. He saw the whole explosion, resulting fire and crash. It was something he will never forget as quoted to me back then. There were other families and racers on this return road, but they remain a mystery. Talk about a ring side seat… they were probably right there when the ambulance picked up my brother after he had jumped out going around 60 mph.

From another Grist Bros Willys thread:
"They purchased a 430 cubic inch Lincoln engine and started building on it. They bored and stroked it to 501 cubic inches. They ran a stock “nodular” crankshaft. In the early days Joe Mailliard helped with the machine work. After Joe Mailliard passed away, Joe Reath started helping with machine work and parts … like a set of Hilborn mechanical fuel injectors. Dempsey Wilson ground all of the camshafts with his "special" grind and Mickey Thompson helped with some aluminum pistons and rods (the compression ratio was around 13 or 14 to 1). A Joe Hunt magneto provided the spark. A guy named Dale Klienhand arranged to have some Headman Headers custom built. The local Autolite and Valvoline distributorships supplied weekly doses of plugs, oil and filters delivered straight to the house.

It wasn’t known exactly how many horses were under the hood, but it more than a handful and the track records were dropping most every week. And, Dad and Ralph were right in the middle of it. I’ve still got some of the NHRA certificates of some of their record-breaking runs.

At first they had a lot of trouble with spinning bearings. Dad and Ralph learned from Ted Cyr and Leland Kolb about drilling the main oil galleys and drilled them out with a special long drill."

upload_2018-11-16_4-25-24.png The Grist Bros Coupe was powered by a MEL style 430 bored and stroked to 501 cubic inches. It had Mickey Thompson aluminum rods and pistons and a Dempsey Wilson camshaft.

  20. JNAKI, I always look forward to your post. Thanks also for your help with my double post last week. ( rusty1) Sam, I posted some old Chevy's from my picture gallery last week. They didn't have, back drop, color, or even drivers! Lol So I dug the old sketches out, and I'm trying to finish them. Here's the first one. 20181116_072420.jpeg
