yes while trying to un stick my direct drive in a old dragster I bought I have apparently made a mistake . I removed the bolts to the rear housing and now I cant get the housing to seat correctly against the 4 speed case as per photo.im guessing I have something out of alignment. After some penetration fluid the direct drive slid right out ,rusty. any input or correcting my mistake thank you
You really do want to take that transmission apart, and fix it....forcing it back together isn't gonna be good.
I'm pretty sure that Jim is right there. That trans is going to have to come apart far enough that you can put the needle bearings back in right and probably needs to be gone through fully anyhow from the looks of the outside.
been sitting out side for 40 years. Its all dissembled and being blasted be like new come spring. ok il get it to a shop and redone. Thanks for all the replies and input
That spline goes into the rear of the trans and is binding (arrow) The welded collar is also binding inside the extension. Where is this associated with the input shaft?
Is that really a 4 speed? a lot of smaller rails used a 3 speed transmission, used 2nd and 3rd as a 2 speed box. Does that stub shaft not come off the pinion shaft? It may have a set screw or roll pin
Being as that is the rear banjo to the left and a welded together driveshaft to go inside the torque tube. It probably can't go anywhere if it does break and may be safer than a U joint there in the long run. That whole setup looks like it sat under water for extended periods of time though. On the other hand that shot of the bare frame sitting on stands shows some real potential.
if the engine would have been in it would have been turn key car.it was complete down to original halibrands fuel tank chute lever seat it was all there.sure it was hurt from weather but it was all there.dont have to rengineer anything to speak of plus nice to talk to the son who was racing it back in he day with there in Oklahoma . photo of it in its day. known as "the good bad and the ugly"fun project. Even came with the trailer they pulled back in the day
The photo by op shows the rear bearing clearly has ring clip grove that holds main shaft to tail housing in stock form. It's just how distorted the photo looks (likely cell phone) that made the bolt pattern and shape look incorrect to me to be a saginaw. How stock tail housing and main shaft when held by ring clip looks. They become as one.
Agree Jim, What I spoke about was prior to c/h's 3 posting of photo's. The 3rd posting does clearly show side cover but to late to help with my portion of the conversation in sequence to this thread.
