Cragars look good on (almost) anything! here's my old 55

 

Hands down, the most iconic wheels of all time. Cragar S/S wheels have been on ALL my street/drag/rodded cars; I even have some big and little's waiting for their turn out in the shed; those were last on the 51 Chevrolet Business Coupe. I just wish the chrome plating was of better quality, so it would't corrode/peel/flake the way it does; you have to really "maintain" them to prevent it. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

 

Cragars are indeed an iconic design and one of the best looking aftermarket wheels on the market for all these years.
Always wanted a set, but then when I saw a pair of 10" ones I could buy, and picked one of them up to more closely examine it, and discovered how heavy they are, I put it down and never looked back.
Way too much weight, both as unsprung weight and rotating weight.

Roy Richter was popular in our house. My brother and I bought parts from Bell Auto for our cars. When the time came, we were done with drag racing and needed helmets for our desert motorcycles, of course, the original Bell 500 helmets were our first choice. Finally, the Cragar S/S wheels came out and would have looked good on my 65 El Camino. At the time, the cost was too great and money was needed elsewhere at the time.

There were several of our friends that had the new S/S wheels and with that new technology, was safe for street and at the drags. Those S/S wheels were popular. They were put up on the El Camino, off of a friend's car, and they looked really good. But, in our household, we still pined for the original Halibrand Mags or the popular 5 spoke American Racing Mags. (more money...!)

Last November, we were on a road trip to Santa Barbara for visiting some friends and relatives. While we were eating dinner at one of the many State Street establishments, a cool cruising station wagon rolled past our table. It looked like a daily driver and what stood out were the shiny Cragar S/S wheels.

The next morning, wouldn’t you know it, but my wife said she saw the cool greenish wagon in our resort hotel parking lot… I whipped out my camera and rolled through the lot. Not wanting to be a “hot rod/cruiser car stalker”, I quickly took some pertinent photos. It was a true daily driver and looked really cool up close.

Just recently, we were on the road to the I-5 freeway in the afternoon in South Orange County. A guy and his wife cruised by with a huge Chevy 2 door sedan. The big sedan had seen its shiny, custom glory days, but still was distinctive on the road. (besides taking up the whole driving lane.) What stood out were some different wire wheels that I had seen before, but were different from the Buick Skylark wire wheels that I had once owned for my 58 Chevy Impala.

They could have been another brand of wires, but the hex cap looked like old Cragar Custom Wheels and the straight spokes to the center hub were a definite change from the Buick Skylark versions. The caps on the big Chevy were well worn, but the distinct hex shape was still there.

For all of the years since I had taken this photo at a car show at the LA Sports Arena, I guess I overlooked those S/S CRAGAR wheels. At the time, most full custom cars had Buick Skylark wire wheels or deep dish chromed rims. From up on the balcony or all the way across the arena floor, this Riviera stood out from the rest, because of the wild paneled paint scheme. Up close, the S/S Cragar wheels made the difference, but the paint drew everyone’s attention.

Recently, I put this color photo on my screen saver to remember those old hot rod photo/car show days. The color stands out in a darkened room when ready for a session on the internet or just booting up the laptop.

It is interesting that a cool photo taken years ago can still be enjoyed and scrutinized today on your computer or laptop. By looking at it every day, something different usually pops out at you. first, it was the wild panel paint on the custom car. This time, it was a set of Cragar S/S Wheels.

La Sports Arena: Set Up Day (for me, it was one of the best days to go to see a car show. It was only the custom car/hot rod guys there to set up their displays and cars, with lots of photo opportunities.)

and those fabulous, car shows… But, only memories remain as it is no longer standing. What a surprise it was to see the Sports Arena gone when we last drove by the Exposition Park area.

 

I like Cragars but couldn’t get them off my coupe fast enough,for me 55 and up only.
