57 to 58" is a good start. '57 ford or 66-77 bronco 9" works well. All depends on wheels, backspacing too.
If you have a specific tire size and wheels that you want to use, and a specific fender lip / tire reveal you want, that needs to be taken into account. Wheel backspace and tire profile can change the wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface a few inches. But 56" to 58" is most likely where you'll end up. Ideally mount the tires on the wheels and set them under the car and get the fender look you want and measure between the wheels.
Unlike how a lot of guys feel about cutting up a nice deuce; that's a great car to start with. I don't know you or you're credentials but when you say hiboy, I assume you plan on losing the fenders. Some people misplace terminology if they are new to hot rods, so sorry if I'm off course. Here is one extreme example of the rearend/wheel combination that can be used. I wanted to have a minimal frontspacing on my rear wheels (10 inches wide) to allow more access for knockoff removal. Most people that don't find an existing rearend width that fits their needs will have a wide one narrowed. I actually started with the widest Ford nine inch housing and still needed to add nearly two inches to one axle tube. Pretty rare but just one example why it may be hard to answer your question without more information.
Without rolling stock information, the question is pointless. All you'll get are guesses that could turn out as wrong as they are right. Once again, you need to provide ALL the information, as suggested above. Some people don't mind the wheels hanging out with a big gap, too close and you have clearance issues with suspension travel. If you are particular about it, you need the rolling stock to mock up then measure between the faces.

Rather 'finished car' to start with...Of course, I've done the same thing, more than a few times; mostly for others, but have had some nice ones myself. But I started 'hands on' in 1955. Not many of the 'nice ones' around any more, unless you count the 'restored'... Man, this Deuce is a drooler! Not that IT does, I DO!
On all the 28-34 customer chassis I do in my shop I use a 56 outside width rear unless the customer requests a different width.
We built a nice one like that once Nice older restored car Drove it to lunch on Thursday. Was in a million pieces on Friday. Axle width depended on wheels We moved in the wheelhouses for cars with fenders. Those fenders look nice. Would almost have to run em Nice cars make nicer hot rods
FWIW, it looks like a large Holman Moody logo on the wall in front of the car in the first picture. Is that a clue to where it is stored?
Please don’t do that to that beautiful car. Turning it into a hi boy. A full fendered 5 window is a thing of beauty.
If you run skinny bias plus anything narrow with the wheel tuck d in looks stupid in my opinion like the car will tip over on a fast corner

koolbeans..., About the Hudson steering box: Neal Jennings (NealinCA here & the Ford Barn) modified the Hudson box to mount into the '32 frame rail in the original position. Don't think he's doing them anymore. I've been told he is building a new 1932 Ford steering box with fresh castings and better internals. -Dave
