Doesn't something look off about the 348 flags on that '59? Also the 6cyl "Chevrolet" script should not be there if the 348 flags were there.

 

Rootie, you've let this picture thread go to the dogs.....and lion cubs!

You've got Rodger Ward, Johnnie Parsons, Blackie Blackburn (not sure exactly who this is), Wilbur Shaw (with Gilmore Oil lion cub mascot), and Larry Bisceglia all with their dogs.

The Gilmore Oil lion cub traveled with Shaw for more than a year and was getting to be a problem as he grew bigger. Shaw would actually leave the lion in his hotel room at times and the lion would amuse himself by literally bouncing himself off of the walls. At some point a window was accidentally left open and the lion jumped at the curtains and through the open window to his demise.

Larry Bisceglia was "Mr. First in Line" at the 500 starting in 1948 until sometime in the middle 1980s. I believe his dog was named Wiggles. After Wiggles passed away Larry would walk around the grounds with one of those gag empty dog harnesses and act like he was walking an invisible dog. For whatever reason Tony Hulman loved having Larry show up every year and made sure he got credentials that gave him free run of the track. And I believe that's an old DeSoto that Larry and Wiggles are sitting on in your photo.
