The Pabco Pacific Flyer on one of its two failed attempts to take off for the 1927 S.F.-Hawaii Dole Air Race, cracking up both times. They got off lucky; of the eight planes entered, two made Hawaii, two crashed on takeoff and four were lost without a trace over the Pacific.

I had one done four years ago. They get you up the next day, pt is rigorous for a while and necessary. I was off pain meds after a week and a half, off the walker and on a cane after two and they also OK'ed me to drive after two weeks. Pretty much back to normal after a month.

 

While this rig looks like it's part of a fire department, it's not. It's a Salvage Wagon, it carries water proof tarps that can be spread over furniture or interior property to keep them from getting water soaked in case the building has a fire on upper floors. I remember them in use in the L.A.F.D. Note the sign above the doors in the background. Organizations like this were typically funded by the insurance companies, and not the taxpayers, but were dispatched along with the fire department to major fires. In Los Angeles, the salvage work was eventually brought in to the fire department and handled by fire fighters.

In this photo of L.A.F.D. Task Force 27, the rig in the upper right with the white tarp is Salvage 27, with their 3-man team. Fire Station 27 was (and still is) the main fire station in the Hollywood area. The new fire station 27 is located next door, this great building (known as "the Big House") no longer met the earthquake codes for the City of L.A. and has been converted into the L.A.F.D. Fire Dept. Museum. To my knowledge, there are no more Salvage Teams with the fire department in the City of L.A.
