Looking for info on 3 and 4 deuce setups. Drawbacks to either setup? Places to purchase linkage specifically for the 4 deuces. Edelbrock manifold with the offset line up. I have done a search on here and not much discussion on the 3 vs the 4s Thanks in advance for any info fellas.
First of all, if running 3 carburetors, you really want run the bigger 4 bolt base carbs (Rochester 2G's or maybe Carters). My dirt car was state "Stock Car Champion" in Minnesota in 1966 and 1967 and ran away from everything with a 324 Olds and an Offy manifold with 3 Carter 4 bolt base two barrels. I don't think you can get enough capacity from 3 94's or 97's. As to 4 carburetors, I have no experience but it would seem to me that they would be harder to tune and would eliminate the possibility of running progressive linkage. Maybe someone with more direct experience than me will see this and check in.
I think 3-2's is the way to go with progressive linkage. If you are going to drive it a lot it should be much more streetable, and economical, running on the center carb until you get on it.
Mine is not an Olds but is a 331 Caddy so should be pretty similar. I have a Horne 4x2 and stromberg 97’s. The linkage is straightforward because all the carbs work at the same time. These manifolds are open inside as opposed to a 180 degree design. I couldn’t be happier with it. It idles as smooth as a gravy sandwich at 500 rpms, has terrific throttle response and cruises easily on the highway. I did change the main jets from .045 to .041 and it could probably go to .040 or .039 pretty easily. Internally the engine is 100% stock. Go with the 4x2’s and don’t look back Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I did this Edelbrock 4x2 with 97s setup on a 371 Olds running the linkage to work all carbs in sync. went a few steps fatter on the power valve and a few smaller on the mains.. works like it should, idles nice, part throttle to wide open smooth and strong. I can dig though my notes if it would help.
I'm running a Cragar manifold on my 324 with non progressive linkage too carbs are set in a square pattern that wouldn't work as well with progressive linkage anyway
Thank you guys for all your help and knowledge. I have the option currently to buy a 3 or 4 setup but the 4 is lacking the linkage. Paul that is the exact staggered setup I’m looking into. The available linkage was making me a bit nervous 30tudor from Oregon thank you for the link. I dug around a bit and couldn’t find much on this subject. Thanks again to everyone who responded
