History Has your attitude concerning 4 doors changed over the years?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Oct 21, 2018.

  1. I bought this 34 Dodge all stock and stripped everything off I didn't like. The only reason I bought this 4 door was because they are all suicide style. Never thought I would build a 4 door hot rod. It's okay but the next one will be a coupe if God gives me the time. 34.jpeg

  2. Had this '39 Willys a while back! It was a very cool & very fast 4 door!

  3. That was a Kool car and the inspiration for me to paint mine white...was the blue 2-door '39 a car rhat belonged to your brother? Incidently the belt line tail lights were way IMG_20160714_205037646 (1).jpg ahead of their time...wonder why they didn't catch on!

Agreed 100% this hobby regardless of car is tough for every newcomer-believe me from experience; trying to maintain and hop up a 70 y/o car while your in high school is really fucking hard. And thats coming from someone who’s 17! IMG_5837.JPG

I just bought a 4 door (wagon). It's almost on topic, but not quite...because it's foreign and not rodding material in any way, shape, or form in the old days...122S Volvo. But it looks just like a 1962 model.

I too... Sadly... In my youth... Ruined a lot of Mordors to resurrect a junk pile 2 door.

My heart aches thinking of how nice some of these cars were. Perfect paint, perfect interior, low mileage and etc. Sigh...

I feel like a heel!!! Or

  9. I would be interested to see the ages of those who are cool with 4 doors, and those who are not. I really think it's generational. I'm 41, I have 3 small children, a full time job and I'm working on my masters degree. If I want to play with cars pre-64, I have a much better chance of a nice 4 door coming along than a 2 door. They're cheaper, and often in better shape because car guys have ignored them for so many years. Believe me, if I could afford a two door I'd own one. I have a 38 Chevy Coupe that's a family heirloom, but it's highly impractical.

No offense to you older gents, but I know when you were my age 4 doors were the kiss of death. But guys my age and younger (in general, I'm sure there are exceptions) don't have a problem with them.

Another thing: If you do hate 4 doors that's fine, but be careful dogging on another guy's car, especially a young guy. Don't you want the hobby to continue? It won't if we keep dousing their fire with a bucket of water because the subject matter isn't "cool" by our standards. Just a thought.. here is what I'm working on right now: 56 Buick Super 4 door hardtop IMG_2737.JPG

I grew up in a 2 door world. Still regret parting out a nice 55 Chev 4 door to build a very rough 2 door. But that"s what we did then. Four doors just look good on some cars and I'm much more receptive to the idea now. The way it sits seems to be more important to the overall look than the number of doors. However, a 4 door hardtop is still tough for me to love.

  11. THIS, I see too much of this.

I think it is a generational thing though. I started out playing around with off-road trucks. I didn't get my 1st old car until I was 27. Which I still have, a 4 door Dodge. So for lots of guys it loses points for being a 4 door and it loses points for being a Mopar. Every show I take it to, it's the only 1 there and I like that. I also like the challenge of making a 4 door look cool. I like the car a lot now. I will never convert it to a 2 door even if the roof gets chopped.

Yeah some guys rag on you for having a 4 door, but I always enjoy when I see an old timer come up and ask questions and you can see them getting excited cause there's a young guy keeping the tradition alive. We are going to keep this alive for another 50 years and so what if our cars have 2 extra doors?

I bought a 4 door because that's all I could find and afford.

This is not going to be popular but driving a 4 door car make you look 20 years older

Bought my four door because it was a third of the price of a comparable coupe. People at gas stations always tell me "too bad it's a four door.." but I like it, I enjoy it, and people who go out of their way to talk shit obviously have nothing better to do. Also I kind of like that's not a valuable collectible, so I can drive it and modify it without worrying about depreciating it's value.

I always saw 4 doors as parts cars, but then I had two kids and it’s hard to get them in and out of my coupes ( even cadillacs) So I slammed a 4 door in the road and am in the process of building a 4 door wagon for mama.

  19. Dan, I think you nailed it, guys your age were raised with 4 doors being the norm where guys like myself avoided them because we thought they looked like our parents cars.

I won't say I like them all but most of the 30's cars and 4 door wagons appeal to me today.

I love my old Deuce tudor and I plan on keeping it but I really enjoyed both my Deuce 4 doors, they are much easier to load and unload with those extra doors. HRP

Had bought a 1953 Buick V8 Tudor new so my newly arrived sister and I would be safe in the back seat, as we grew older the Fordors arrived. Bob

...after just looking at a four door straight axle car here I have to say the farther away you get from original the less I like it. 4 doors should stick to wheels, paint, stance, and a light shave at the most IMHO

My 55 Oldsmobile Super 88 4 door sedan still in state of repair but just got it registered and on the road. Shares the garage with my 40 Ford. IMG_1210.JPG IMG_1210.JPG IMG_1211.JPG IMG_1213.JPG IMG_1218.JPG IMG_1216.JPG IMG_1211.JPG IMG_1213.JPG IMG_1216.JPG

I've always liked 2 doors better , but just finished this 4 door '64 Dodge 330 wagon and have never owned a car that got people as excited as this car does. 20180915_151434.jpg

    I've had a gang of '46 Fords:
First, a gift car: Really steeply raked '46 Tudor; (parked it in front of Mel's Palm Bowl, everybody on the Main said "Wow...see that wild '46 standin' on its nose at Mel's?"
4" Mor-Drop, American Auto Supply, $10.95 exch.; sectioned front crossmember, flattened spring, reversed eyes and shackles. Zowie, on the ground! 4" at bumper.

    Item:
    2nd '46, a $12 '46 club coupe. Real 'Zorch', blown Chrysler, Torq-Thrusts, much more. '46es ruled.

    Item:
Bought a '48 Merc convert, it was red...I dropped it, polished it up, gave the flattie some Grant rings and F/M bearings, valve job, Weber F-1 cam, dual 97s on an old Weiand manifold. Coolsville, clean ride...

    Item:
NOW! My friend of 60 years, Marc. We're talking about a tentative project of his...but it's a FORDOR '47 Ford. My hot rod assisting wife thinks it's got 'the lines'...
Marc is into it, but makes it a gift to me. I am speechless, (I know all about these cars!)
but Marc has Chassis Engineering, Posies, and springs, front, rear, center hardware...
    Okay, I'll take it!
Now...Believe it, I have a total of 22 grandchildren. The back seat of '47 fordors isn't big enough to take them all at once, but just divided by 5...we can do it. Runs will be selected by preference.
    Eagle field will eclipse 'Goodguys'....

I, myself, wouldn't want to own your Olds but I dig seeing it. Even though I'm
a two door kind of guy I can appreciate your car. I bet I wouldn't like it as much
if it was a perfectly restored edition. There's something about that as-used look.
It's definitely not a beater and I'm glad to see it has stock wheel covers. The one
thing I never understood was the skirts on these, as opposed to having the quarters
match the fenders. By the way, if I saw it on the street or in a parking lot I'd stop
and rip off a couple of photos for my collection.

This is living proof that four door wagons can have a koolness factor. Hell, if professional
drag racers could use these for tow and push cars, who am I to scoff. But I wouldn't feel
the same about, say, a 1981 Caprice Classic wagon.

Not a fan of four door cars but I love wagons and plan to build one for a DD. Probably late 50-60s Plymouth Wagon.

  30. I’ve always been a fan of 4dr vehicles, just haven’t found one that suits me, yet...
