Does that mean I would be either forced to use the speedo/front tire system or not have a speedometer at all?

How about an aftermarket piece or digital device that can figure how fast the car goes as ugly as that sounds with such a nice looking dash I really don't want to add much if anything to the dash.

I had a ot car that had a swaped sbc350, and I used an app on my speedometer app on my phone that was very accurate, and this was 2012.

A GPS unit of some type would be my ‘go to ‘ solution. I use a portable Garmin unit in everything I drive.

  9. There are various Vehicle Speed Sensor driven converter units that will drive a mechanical speedometer via a motor. You might contact one of them and see if they have any solution utilizing driveshaft magnets and a remote VSS if you are heart set on using that transmission. Or pull the tailshaft and see if the output shaft has provision for a speedo drive gear. If so, add the gear and find a tailhousing to match the main output shaft. Or swap that transmission for a non Oldsmobile TH400 or look for a TH200-4R and have a four speed with lockup converter, there are kits to electronically operate the lockup converter, I would do that instead of adding a GPS speedometer. I'm of the camp if the gauge is in the dash it has to work.

Thanks alot I'll look into my tailshaft to get an answer. Thanks for your help. And I too desire a functional original dash even if whats under the hood is not.

You can't use the front drive speedo without the spindle that is hollow so the cable can go through it to the driver in the dust cap.

I have the same situation on my bucket with the TH400, so I use an APP I downloaded with a speedo, works fine.

Thanks Ben, thanks for the help. More "old farts" have helped me than any "young poop" has.
