I have added flames to many cars and bikes and mailboxes upon request , but never on my cars or bikes. I did put flames on my Ex-wifes vacuum cleaner once

Every car can be improved with flames! And, every car can be ruined with them. How's that for an answer?

Jack James' Buick was pretty much just a Buick until Larry Watson got ahold of it.

    Good flames cant be beat!
    Bad flames ruin a car.
There is a fine line dividing the two, and really no in between.

Sorry, but I dig primitive flames on a beater.

  8. Personal taste issue..who's to tell someone else their taste is wrong, on their own car?
If resale is a factor, flames will likely diminish the potential list of buyers.
I, like most on here apparently, like them on some cars, but not so much on others.

  10. I like the newer style of flames on some cars, that big field of yellow, orange or red in front of them, not so much any more. Ghost flames, why even bother if they are hard to see?

Bill Roell & son flames. I had to replace the hood as the original had a blower. Jim Norris perfectly did the hood & the green pin stripe outline on all the flames.

  17. Lots of mention of the California Kid on this thread which had the flames painted by a fellow HAMB member @bigm Manuel Reyes. I am also proud to say he mixed the paint for my truck build.

I'm not planning flames on anything of mine, but if I did put flames on a car they'd be the definitive type, Watson crab-claws fading from a very pale yellow in front, through orange and red, to a tiny touch of purple at the very tips, with a white keyline on a shiny black car. The reason is that this constitutes a sort of hot rod insignia: it makes a car say "I am a hot rod" and places the car in a confrontational juxtaposition against the condition of stockness. Ironically, in so doing, it also confirms the condition of stockness as something which exists.

In my own projects and most of my designs that is not what I am after. Like the first hot rodders I'm after doing what the OEMs were doing, but on my own terms. I don't want to give the OEM the graphic finger; I want to dislodge, expel, banish, supplant the OEM. It's a deeper Girardian mimesis and, though the reigning condition of the world powerfully provokes it, it can ultimately be problematic.

These cars need to appeal to the basic kid in us or they become boring.

  22. Hard to believe there are so many "hot rodders" that don't like flames......
They kinda define hot rod to me.

I like the Ohio flames on some cars, other styles not always when they appear “forced” in the cars design.

  30. I love old style flames, but ghost flames and all other "modern" flames not so much. I had to redo the original "ghost" flames on my merc after a little crash and some deep scratches and decided to replace them with some more tradtional flames. Same outlines as before, but different colours. Fits the car, I think.
