before I could get a drivers license.
With odd job money I bought a well used big single cyl Harley hard tail track bike.
It had so much low end torque you'd swear you could drive it straight up out of a well.
The air filter was missing. There were two screw holes for the old missing one.
I took a metal Planters Peanuts can, cut a hole in the metal bottom for the carb opening, holes for the 2 screws into the carb housing, then drilled dozens of breathing holes all around the can walls.
After I screwed the Planters Peanuts can to the carb, I grabbed a fluffy knitted potholder and put it in the can, then snapped on the plastic lid.
Voila! I had a free breathing filter to keep the pebbles and leaves and flying sticks out of the engine.
To clean it, I peeled off the plastic lid, pulled out and rinsed the potholder, shoved it back in and snapped the plastic lid back on.
That Planters Peanuts air filter became the first thing people saw, and the first thing they talked about.
A conversation piece, and it WORKED!

Dual Element Air Cleaner 1.jpg A couple I've made. The cast aluminum piece was a Mercury outboard gas tank & recoil starter.

Patterned off the z-11 style air cleaner. I built the air cleaner housing, and had a fella build the lid. The lid I had made was flat, and this domed lid looks more correct.

I bought this moon unit (zapa?) and hit it with the bridgeport and removed some fins, sanded, polished, cut the attachment studs off a 396 fender emblem and JB'd it to the new flat spot. For my OT Camaro.

I posted this up before here but some hard case felt it was too rat roddy? Go figure? Anyway, it is made from a 1957 (I think) Mercury hubcap a buddy had hanging on his garage wall. I had a 4 bbl on my flattie at the time and thought it looked pretty good when I was done. Running a Merc 4 inch crank in the motor so it seemed appropriate to me.

9DA328C8-1742-42C6-A3C9-B57CB94EDF4B.jpeg This one from my buddy Cam Grant. He has the pattern and had one cast for me. I fitted a 6” dia. x 3” filter element, a 1/8” aluminum base. Looks “HAMB” friendly.
