You know, there are lots of people on this site with lots of different backgrounds and different levels of experience.

It would be great if people would occasionally (or regularly) extract individual historic photos and provide a little bit of background information on the car (or truck).

I agree, Peanut 1959. A little info, even if no more than the picture source, could go a long way toward helping those who wish to be educated, as well as entertained.
(Applies to newer builds, as well.)

Never noticed this before, probably because I never see many pics of the current condition "white" car. The line between the upper and lower quarter panel makes the stock downward curve at the rear of the quarter. But on the block-sand photo at Barris' shop, that line flows into the tail light. I read up a little at Kustomrama and find out the car was in a fire at one time. To get it back to the "white" car, hood, deck and roof all were replaced and all kustom body work had to be redone.

Anybody have details on current owners plans? I would love to see this original Barris Merc returned to the same body mods, and two tone green paint.

I Scan0739.jpg heard somewhere he bought the car in the 70`s in Arizona not knowing of the history behind the car. I took this pic in Springfield Illinois at a KKOA show.

This Merc is great! I'm assuming the bare steel areas are where the cuts and metalwork for the chop, frenched headlights, rounded hood corners, etc. were done.
I'm hoping the bare steel Desoto teeth are in the grill cavity for placement and will eventually be sent in for re-plating and not covered in body colored paint. Judging by the evident high quality work, I'd assume they will end up at the chrome shop. E

    Every picture tells a story!
To me, this Merc will never appear any more intriguing than it does here. Not only can you see the mods, but also the time line. Stainless done, glass installed, primer yet to come. (Or maybe it's finished? :D) What a captured moment!
(P.S., I love the later Merc wheel covers.)

  15. I was looking through the 1949, 1950, 1951 Mercury Pictures thread this morning drooling and dreaming when I came upon a few posts by the late Dave Jenkins. I didn't know this, but Dave was a HAMBer that went by the name "57belair". Dave had a spectacular '57 Chevy custom he bought new and owned up until the day he passed away. The car is INCREDIBLE!

I just thought I'd bring it up to the powers that be (@Moriarity) that he needs to have his HAMB profile updated to the HAMB Member Emeritus status.

It's the least we could do to honor a true custom guy that gave us so much. He is missed..........E

Dave got his first car when he was 15 years old, and turned a sow's ear into a silk purse.
As was true with his '57, those are genuine Jimmy Jones skirts!

Mickey Taylor of Blasdell, NY ( Iron Horse South ) passed yesterday. A legend & true talent in WNY custom community. He kept the kustom torch lit during the 70's- early 80's when few others cared.

Doug Thompson should be a household name, having built a slew of stellar customs.
He apprenticed under another (should-be) legend, Ray Fahrner, at the tender age of 14.

Here is Fahrner's famous "Eclipse" '32 Ford (designed by and co-built with Thompson)
in its original hue. (Somehow, the true-blue repaint seemed to ground the Zeppelin, IMO).
Note the date of the photographs.
