My dad was a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton (north of San Diego), my mother was a local San Diego girl. My older sister and I were both born at Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton. I'm was too young to remember this, but our on base housing from 1960 to 1964 was a trailer like you described, mounted on 4 metal posts with the wheels removed. We were in a neighborhood made up of trailers set up like this.

When my dad was discharged from active duty in 1964, he loaded up the family in our 1941 Chevy coupe and moved us all back to Peabody MA, where his family lived. That lasted through one winter, then it was back to California for us.

We moved into a small apartment in Santa Clara CA (bay area) in 1965. being 3 years old at that time, this is the first place where I can remember living. I remember our green '62 Rambler wagon and two other cars from the parking lot that caught my attention, a blue first generation Barracuda, and a white 356 Porsche coupe. I also remember the kinda mean older kid who intentionally dropped my favorite Matchbox car, a '59 Impala two door hardtop, down a drain pipe. It took over twenty years for me to replace that Matchbox car.

    Great photo, Rootie and thanks!

Could this be Vukovich in a brand new Malloy car at Carrell Speedway?

    Hey M,
Nice So Cal story. I saw an old photo of a trailer company back in those early 40s, somewhere in Van Nuys or up in the valley area. They made the trailers for the war effort. So, those trailers at Camp Pendleton could have been similar ones. The trailers in Long Beach were specifically made for the "black" aircraft workers in the Long Beach area aircraft industry companies.
upload_2018-10-5_9-56-44.png the small ones to the left and the larger ones in the center on poles with tires.

The land was close enough to the major streets to the West, East and to Douglas Aircraft nearby. After 1946 time period, everyone could live in those trailers, as the past residents scattered all over So Cal and elsewhere. Ever since it opened, the large Goodwill Industries main building and company is located in the spot where those pre/post war trailers were built and installed. It was our home for 2.5 years.

Not sure of the driver but it does look kinda like Vuky , the car is the future Belanger 99 probably on its shakedown runs at Carrell.

Probably not high percentage of nitro, I seem to remember that it was hard to get high percentage of nitro thru carburetors.

Wow. Then that would make the man in the hat Dale Drake. This would have been with the supercharged midget engine I assume. There were certainly quite a few changes between this shakedown run (probably in early 1949) and the final product with Lee Wallard in 1951. Lujie Lesovsky basically rebuilt the entire car after Bettenhausen wrecked the car at Sacramento in late 1950.
