    Lions Dragstrip 1959-60

    Hey G,
Great find of Robert Balogh in action at Lions in the late 50s, early 1960. ROBERT
“BONES” BALOGH made quite a name for himself in the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class in the late 50s the early 60s. He has carried it out throughout his illustrious career in hot rodding/drag racing. He is definitely a legend in the drag racing circles.

As we all know, specific action shots from that early time period are out there. It is a matter of fact that someone will eventually find that elusive shot buried in boxes or obscure photo archives.

He has been a favorite of our hot rod drag racing era since we saw him at Lions back in 1959-60. Right around the time the latest Isky Gilmer 671 Blower Kits came on the market, he had one of the first ones. (working at and with Ed Iskenderian also helped…) We were in the throes of rebuilding our own 6 Stromberg carburetor, 283 SBC into a larger 292 size during this time. Luckily, we got our hands on a similar new, Isky Gilmer 671 Blower Kit and proceeded to build our last motor for racing at Lions.

upload_2018-10-3_4-9-48.png This photo is Robert Balogh’s, taken in 1960.
It is my favorite photo that I have been posting here. It as the best example of our own completed 671 SBC motor for our 1940 Willys C/Gas Coupe. (We lost all of our photos of our Willys build and racing for some reason.) It is a photo that brings on the chill factor and a flood of memories.

So, also during that same time period, Bones Balogh had a 49 Chevy Fastback that had a 283 in it, but it also ended up having a 671 added to the mix.

For the past several years, locally in So Cal, he has been at the Automotive Driving Museum (ADM) in El Segundo, CA. It was for the annual Summer tribute to the “Legends of The Gas Coupe and Sedan Classes.” He has been a stalwart of the panel of experts on the topic.

The above Chevy fastback was the beginning of the long standing history of the Gas Coupes and Sedans in So Cal. (By the way, there are rumors that some movies of the long line up of Gas Coupes and Sedans from So Cal during 1958-64 are also on display.)

Only one Twin Beechcraft (Beech 18) in the photo, the first aircraft in the line of three. The second aircraft in that line of three is a single engine machine. The other two twin engine aircraft are Cessna T-50 Bobcats (what Sky King flew).

When McDonald's grabbed me and held me down and attempted to make me eat a Big Mac, I barely escaped. I was not so fortunate with Burger King and Budweiser. They ganged up on me and won the battle.

Pink wire looks to be a bead rolled into the body...But I have been wrong before.

I see that Marylin's Ford Thunderbird is up for auction this month.
Not saved up enough to bid, though.

I agree, it goes to the front of the car too, not a wire.

Looks like Earl Gilmore on the left with famed air racer Roscoe Turner on the right. Turner set many records flying with lion cub named Gilmore as his "co-pilot". After the lion grew too big he lived out the rest of his days on a California ranch I believe. Roscoe had Gilmore mounted and displayed in his Indianapolis home. Today the lion is store somewhere in the National Air & Space Museum but hasn't been on display for many years.

  28. Hayes Engineering Works is still in existence as a heritage site. Oturehua is in Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand. The business is still operating, but in Invercargill. The shop has a large collection of cars and bikes on display, including Burt Munro's Indian streamliner. https://www.ehayes.co.nz/Our-Company/history-__I.301 According to the caption on the photo above which can be seen on the history page on the website, the vehicle is a 1910 Buick, and is on display in the shop today. I think it is actually a bit later than 1910.
