I think there is more interest in restored wooden boats than Aluminum Trailers on this forum. Just my 2cts. worth

Here's my grandpop's tunnel boat from the late 60s. Not sure if it's too new or not, but it's wood, handmade, fast, and won many APBA Unlimited Outboard races. (Unlimited Outboard is the class that eventually grew into F1) The guy in the straw hat is Grandpop himself.

 

At an auction I went to Sunday. Sold for $130 without the motor.

My dad had one just like that when I was in highschool: '61 pamlico model 166, it had been my great uncles since '63. Cool to see another one. They didn't make very many in those years.

I haven't had mine in the water yet. I am ready to try it now. I just bought 2 more Bearcat motors, and got my Homelite running.

 

This is my 1954 Penn Yan that I'm working on. Once I get the top side and free boards stripped it's on to the inside which will not be fun.

Wellington State Park in Bristol NH on Newfound Lake. One of the clearest lakes in the USA.

I still need to get it running right, as I have something messed up with the safety lever, so I haven't motored around the lake yet.

 

Glad that you know how to "drive" a sailboat. I would end up wrecking it and it is too nice for that to happen.

 

Does building a mahogany and cypress pirogue from early 20th century plans count?

Mine is long gone, had fun with it for a couple years before a darned old Arkansas tornado tore it in half, planted half in the neighbor's yard with the rest never to be seen again...

Like the old boats. Due to old age time to get rid of some. Also have 65 or 70 old outboard motors from the mid 50's to mid 60's. This 65 Old Town runabout with twin 58 35hp Johnsons is the most recent active toy !

 

A friend called today to see if I wanted to go to the Rhode Island Ocean towns...Hell YES. Our first stop was one of the "playground of the rich"..Watch Hill, RI. I was so stoked to see this famous "boat" there... The Aphrodite. I believe Watch Hill is it's home port painted on the stern. This dock was off limits to tourists, so I could not get close-ups.

I am positive this is the boat that was commandeered by the US Coast Guard in WW2, to be painted fully in Navy Gray to be used as Submarine patrols off the New England coast of the North Atlantic. I was not able to find a very cool WW2 pic of it in gray, at full speed on patrol that I have seen in the past.

I fist saw it in person at the Mystic Seaport annual wood boat parade in Ct, back in the 1980s..

Also I have added a pic from the net, showing the torpedo transom...wowee..

You cannot really see the 100% mirror like reflection in the black hull sides!! It had to have been blocked out with many hours of effort.

Looks like it. I worked there summer of 1988 (I think). When the owners would fly up from NYC I would have to get the 2 Mercedes out and prepped. One was a big boat saloon 190b, but my favorite was driving the 280sl out to the airport. Funny how a 5 mile drive would take me an hour or more and put 30 or so miles on the odometer.....

My buddy that I worked with there was dating the girl who's Dad bought her the house they used in the movie "Mystic Pizza" on Potter Cove. The wealth exuded from the summer residents there was incomprehensible.

we tried to "fit in''.......we had my friends huge 420 lwb MB...but...um,... er.....it has primer spots, and a broken grille.

Great photo...and that really shows the mirror surface on the black hull.

I cannot imagine caring for something like these "wooden wonders" sitting in salt water, but also hit with salted mist each day and night. Certainly you know that climate very well.

There were dozens of contractor crews working on so many ocean front homes that day. I wonder how much labor is spent each year on something like this below..


I wish I could travel back in time to see the heavyweight classic cars that must have been in this area back then. I even kept reminding my friend that all the private mansions "were just their summer homes".

Yeah. That is The Ocean House. Believe it or not that place was totally run down and empty back in the 1980s. We used to climb up on the roof and check the waves. Now it is a pretty ritzy summer resort again. Harry Connick Jr and Conan O'Brian often stay there.

I heard that the Campbell's soup family sold their "summer cottage" there a few years ago that they had owned forever. Too much "new money" probably, and neighborhood going to pot, with Taylor Swift moving in, haha.

Those were halcyon days...
