That’s Dick Brannan (driver and head of the Ford “Drag Council”)and Charlie Gray (Brannan’s boss, and head of Ford drag racing operations) checking out Brannan’s brand new ‘65 A/FX car.
The photo is so early, you’ll notice the valve covers still have the “experimental” serial number stickers on them from the “X-Garage”,and the Cammer is wearing only a single carb.
    That’s a pretty rare photo,LB.Nice one.

    Scott

Looking back at the photo,I see that the stickers are gone, but the oval outline on the back of the valve cover remains.

I'd go as far and say pure porn with ANY 427SOHC!:D:eek:

  11. One other interesting detail in that pic.... Possibly the first appearance of a dual-feed Holley carb?

i don't quite understand. i thought a 3/8" stroker kit would increase displacement to 427 cu in. heck, stone woods and cookie ran a 392 stroked out to 482" [approx}.

The second one looking into the engine bay? That came from a Hot Rod mag story I'm pretty sure. I am not the photographer nor do I own rights to it.

  20. What do you think it was?

    427-SOHC-Ford-Full-Cutaway.jpg

Actually better than a dodge hemi because of the lack of elongated pushrods and rocker arms to actuate the valves, bigger runner volume.

"Almost better than a hemi" REALLY?

    Loudbang,
Thank you very much for this information. I'll search the magazine for photo credits. I'll keep you posted when this film comes out on PBS later this year!

The SOC motor still effects Nascar today with the rule change that killed it. The cam must be in the block.

The rule change that kept the Ford SOHC out of NASCAR was a significant weight penalty that NASCAR threatened Ford with if they brought the SOHC to the track. The cars would not have been competitive with the extra weight, but it would have been perfectly legal to run the SOHC motor. It wasn't until later on when Chrysler started researching and testing OHC engines that NASCAR implemented the cam in block rule.
