Here's some driven footage of that wild Hotrod from Japan...no surprise he's smiling...

Damn! Where's the rest of the story? Continued on page 30? How fast did it go? What is the displacement on the Duesenberg? I have a 413ci Dodge flathead and would like to do something similar. It puts out near the same HP as the Duesy.

I don't think it's the same hotrod. The vintage article mentions Sterkin but Jay's friends Deusy was an Ulrich bros creation...no mention of Sterkin. Please help paint the picture for us...in the meantime I'll do more snooping...;)...as far as I can see is the Sterkin ride is gonzo except for the historical reference.

It says in the Mag Al Sterkin is said to have used a model A Roadster Body...see bottom pic.

The Kustomrama pic it appears there are numerous differences apart from the body including a typo in the name (Serkins) not sure which is right...

Just an interesting observation..perhaps he had 2. This Jalopy Hotrod at the top is identified as Al Serkins who also may have had the Deusy in the Motor Mag writeup but the car and Owner are different (Al Sterkin)...o_O...similar styling but perhaps 2 different Hotrods...

Just another highlight was Sterkins Deusy was street driven as well...and perhaps the other as it had headlights as well.

Six Ball...so it seems there were at least 3 of these sizable Racer/Hotrods...perhaps there were many more. The Ulrich Bros racer/Hotrod still remains.

I wonder about the Sterkin Racer/Hotrods...it seems there was 2.

I have an interesting vision of the thought of seeing either of those Jalopies cruising down the road...that would have been a sight...This is one of the things that surely made things interesting back then that's for sure.

I guess after WW11 was over some liked the allure and power of the big engines and Big cars of the time were a close second.

Does anyone know what became of the Sterkin Racers?

Really interesting story with this...some very sad. This was a Hotrodders period vision of an off the wall wild thing...a mix of Winfield, Ivo and Chrisman and of course his own upbringing around all things Vintage Hotrod.

It is surprisingly art...literally...back in the mid fifties to early sixties this could have wowed the crowds but two fellas one a Hamber collaborated and built this inspired...it's really cool.

It wowed just as you would expect and the Artist/Hotrodder while high on life and what he had accomplished passed suddenly doing what his passion was way way to young...Rip Rick Elliot.

Al Sterkin's son Mike was a classmate of mine in Jr High School. He told me that his dad had a Duesenberg powered hot rod, but it was several years before I saw the pictures in a magazine.

That is priceless info 50...you don't ever recall him saying there were 2.

Do you agree that the 2 setback Roadster bodied Jalopies are different vehicles. Even the Grilles and engines are different.

Perhaps the Kustomrama roadster isn't even a Deusenberg. Being that the names of the owners are close enough to be a typo doesn't mean they may in fact be two different people.

Pretty darn unusual looking Hotrod Racers that's for sure.

Mike never mentioned a second car. I was about 13, and I really didn't know anything about Duesenbergs.
There are other differences between the two pictures: The Sterkin car has a single carburetor, which was standard for a J-type Duesy; the Kustomrama car has 4 carbs. The radiator is further forward on the Sterkin car. The rear spring mounts are slightly different, although the position of the body on the chassis looks exactly the same between the two.
The two are similar enough that they COULD be the same car, but different enough to argue that they're different. I think that because of the scarcity of Duesenberg engines and the similarity of the body/chassis relationships, I'd say that they're probably the same car, but owned by two different people with years in between the two versions.

    Al Serkin Deusenberg? Name typo?
    Similar but different car
Frame, body, headlights, numerous engine details, grille dissimilar...still could be later generation jalopization from the former as suggested by 50.

Magazine verified Al Sterkin Deusenberg is said to have used a Model A Roadster Body

The Kustomrama pic it appears there are numerous differences apart from the body

The more I look at these two pictures the more I believe they are two different bodies on different chassis, ironically very similar in build. Even the windshields slope similarly...they had to have known each other...then the name coincidence both Al's with almost identical last names...

Being that Kustomrama is such a cool wealth of information perhaps I will shoot them an email with their take on this...it's an interesting bit of history...

Again I have this vision of one of those behemoths pulling up to a traffic light or passing me on the highway...one would definately look on with a huge curiosity.

    Ahh the good ole days...;)
