    Hello,
As an old photographer, shadows did not make the subject stand out, so most of our photos were taken at angles to prevent much in the way of shadows. 12 o'clock was a straight down shadow time and that allowed plenty time for great b/w and color Ektachrome shots.

But, not all photos can be taken at 12 noon. It was a dilemma for great magazine shots. Even during the day, a fill flash was used to highlight under the car or deep into the dark reaches of the interior. The trick was to show a photo without a flash blob in the photo and a clear view of the darkened areas.

With today’s computer programs, those can be taken out to enhance the custom car or hot rod. Digital camera’s can show where that shadow is helping or damaging the actual photo. In the days of film cameras, it was the eye of the photographer to come up with the best angle for the best shot. Composition also plays a huge part in submitting a great photo that will past the test of time and especially those very critical editors’ comments.

Editor’s eyes and thoughts on photography did clash with a lot of photographer’s knowledge, alongside the creative ideas. So, that is why there were always tons of B/W photos and at least one 36 shot color Ektachrome slide film available for each hot rod, motorcycle or custom car on various photo shoots.

@jnaki thanks for your insight on this from the commercial/professional side of things...

Shadow interest at the pro level seems to have been a non desirable added feature...it must have been awkward to those that actually saw them as added visual interest...I sure do.

But I'm always looking at the other elements at play.

Some of the commercial enterprises did allow Shadows as witnessed by some of the vintage pics...a number even have overlapping shadows due to multiple light sources.

It's funny I sense many Photographers saw beauty in shadow even if directed to eliminate or lessen the incidence of them when doing a shoot.

That is probably why many photographers when shooting at an non directed level involved them with their work...

I think many times they are just random addictions to a picture and noticed at the viewing/edit level.

@jnaki I would also add to my thanking you for your insight on shadows in the Hotrod/Custom/Race Magazine level another thank you for sharing your art of photography as well. Sorry for not acknowledging that earlier...

Like the many varied skills and talents amongst the membership there are many well walked and versed in the Photographic end of the spectrum which I might add is a really important one at that...What's that saying again?...Pics or it didn't happen...:D
