Folks Of Interest Notable legends that owned cool cars

  1. Bonnie & Clyde were notable figures also although crime & murder lead to their short carrier.

Phil Hill world champion Grand Prix 1961 Ferrari, he raced for Carroll Shelby
These are two photos I have on my collection that I purchased from someone that said Phil Hill is in this roadster pick up and the other roadster was a guy named Bob I’m guessing it’s Bob Wenz who lived across the street from Phil in Santa Monica.

  7. Carroll Shelby & Phil Hill, what a great photo. HRP

  8. Last I heard there is at least couple of thousand considerable/large/major car collections in the US alone and probably most are owned by noteworthy (legendary ?) individuals.
Then of course there are (tens of?) thousands of smaller collections or individual cars owned noteworthy (legendary ?) individuals in the US alone.
And what constitutes a "legend" ?
Some (like me ?) might be that just in their (our ?) own shower. :D

As for getting their start* (and continuing life) involving cool cars, I think Nick Mason of Pink Floyd would definitely qualify, not only as "legendary" drummer, but also still collecting/driving/owning/racing some pretty darn "legendary" cars.
*IIRC, his dad was an amateur racer, etc back in the day.

I get and completely agree with what TTR is saying, and further I think this thread has gotten off track. It is one thing to be a car guy and then “make it” in your chosen field, and quite another to acquire the wherewithal later in life to purchase the car (or cars) of your dreams.
Certainly there are others shown here, but for sure Jeff Beck is a hands on car guy.

  11. I fail to see where I got off track, I never said they built cars, but several have,it was/is a light hearted look at different individuals whose lives have been effected by their involvement with cars. HRP

I had a different take on it when I read the thread title, but that’s OK, it’s all good and my intent was not to pick a fight.
I will say though that using Dan Gurney for example is closer to my interpretation of the title. A young hot rodder becoming a stellar fabricator, engineer/builder and a championship racer fits the bill perfectly. His love of cars led him to his career path.

It would be a short thread if the people had to be all those things.

  14. Hence my suggestion of being a "legend" myself :D
Well, your title mentioned "...got their START involving cool cars" , hence my reference to Nick.
I mean there are and has been thousands of "legendary" individuals involved with cool cars, but I also understood your title meaning only those who, regardles of eventual career path, etc, "...got their START .... " and therefor agree it rather quickly, like almost every thread here, veered off track.

  16. There is no doubt in my mind that Nick Mason is a passionate car collector but I was tring to keep the cars as hamb friendly as possible, he does have some exotic cars.

The 1962 Ferrari GTO is to die for as well as a few more exotics

What the heck, here are a couple of them.

  21. OK, with all the banter about the title I re-read it and is/was slightly off kilter and I changed it to be more appropriate to the thread. HRP

I'm sure there are lots of sports legends and entertainers that own cool cars. Reggie Jackson and Jimmy Vaughn come to mind. How about Eric Clapton.

This could be a 100 page thread, but not the first one on the subject.
