Hot Rod Magazine has the motto, “Where it all Began” well, the old drawings of mine date back to my freshman and software years in High school. The ’57 was an early attempt at a Roth inspired caricature but with my own twist.

The Ford Sheriff car was drawn for an art assignment where we copied an image from a magazine. It wasn’t traced. we used the grid technique then I transferred the rough drawing to clean paper using graphite on the back side of the sketch.

This is not my original artwork but it is my photo. This image was painted on a race car
at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin in 1972.

    Hello,

Researching in my old files and online gives wonderful old drag racing history. Drawing those Hemi motors and mag wheels became a weekly thing in college. If I could not build one, I certainly could draw one (however it looked on paper) from my memories of what they looked like back in the 58-60 drag racing era.

There were many race cars that were just a metal tube frame, wheels, and a big motor. Then, the other camp was put on a streamlined body to get the advantage in wind flow over the race car. (as we old drag racers know, every item helps the speed and times)

As much as we would like to acknowledge the effects of streamlining on design, it may not matter at the drags. The effects on a ¼ mile let alone 1/8th or the 1000 ft marker, is too short to probably make a difference. Streamlining looks good on all race cars, but the effects are probably negligible in drag racing, to a point.

The battle of wits still goes on today. If it is an all out assault on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Bolivia, or locally at El Mirage, then bring on the streamlining to eek out every advantage in setting those top speed run records. (OK, extremists, put the Jocko’s motor/frame underneath a VW van and there will probably be a difference.) But, on the average, it is probably an argument of wind tunnel design and actual builds.

If not stirring up the “pot”, computer aided designs and wind tunnel results only go so far in drag racing. Down force here, wind flow over the tires there, spoilers to guide the wind over the sleek chassis, etc. With all of the streamlining add-ons, what is with those huge spoilers or air foils in the rear?

So what does all of this have to do with drag racing in the old days? Sometimes a race car just stands out as an exercise in design that looks fabulous. Records are there for all to shoot for in the racing days. (adjustments here, tire pressure there, new plug gaps, timing, etc) But, a sleek design always catches the eye of the race enthusiasts. The Jack Williams, blue, SCUDERIA FED from Canada, just had it in droves…

There were different versions of this beautiful blue race car. The early 1960’s with the top mounted 671 Hemi to the front mounted 671 Hemi in the 1963 version. Then as the world turns, a recreated version of the 1960 Scuderia was built and has been shown at drag racing reunions all over the West Coast of the USA.

    upload_2018-9-28_3-59-23.png 2016 Family Legacy:

“Thirty years since its last, disastrous local appearance in competition, one of Canada’s greatest AA/Gas Dragsters came to cackle with late builder-driver Jack Williams’ daughter under its signature canopy. Wendy Williams rescued Dad’s original trailer from nearly six decades of British Columbia winters.”
