I dug a FMX transmission out of my storage shed and I'm trying to remember what I took it out of. The code numbers are PHB AT2 K 28C and D70P AUB
I'm planning on putting it in my 49 Ford with a 351W. I'm sure it's a good tranny or I wouldn't of saved it, just curious.

  2. The D7 indicates it's a '77 or slightly newer... Only used behind the 351/400, that limits it to Granadas, LTD, and the LTDII (and their mercury equivalents) in cars, possibly a truck but AFAIK the trucks all got the C6..

If it is off a 351M Modified or 400 Ford(often also called the 400M, but incorrectly so) it won't bolt up to a 351W.... The 351M/400 have the Big Block bellhousing bolt pattern , same as is on the 385 series(429/460) big blocks.

Weren't the FMX trannys cast iron units or did they make any alum versions? Heavy suckers from what I remember, having hauled one out from under my 46 coupe.

I don’t know if/when they may have changed, but the FMX I recall from the ‘60s were a three piece case......aluminum bell housing, cast iron main case and aluminum tailhousing.

  6. That's still not a deal breaker, as you can swap bells. And Ray is correct, by the late '50s the cast-iron bells had disappeared in favor of aluminum.

And some early 400s were cast with the small-block bell pattern, but they're pretty rare today.

They did come in some pickup trucks. We had one come in when I worked at a Ford dealership. Why Ford would use one of the worst designs ever for an automatic transmissions is beyond me.

Granada’s only got C4’s. Trans tunnel isn’t big enough on them for a FMX.

  9. I can't speak to Granada's, but I have personally seen a FMX in both a Monarch and a Lincoln Versailles w/351W motors.

It does have the big 351-400M bell housing but I have a W pattern bell housing from a junk tranny. The FMX is tough and I'm not worried about the weight. I just wondered what it came off of.

  11. Yes Sir you could have, they were made in all flavors. 302/351 Windsor, small block, 351M 400 385 series, big block.

Granada was just a longer wheelbase Maverick, largest engine from the factory was 351W. And it was shock tower to shock tower, no way a big block would fit. You’re probably thinking of the LTD II platform, which the last Rancheros were based on They did have 351-400M and 385 series engines. It was sized between the Granada and the full sized LTD.

  13. I was talking about the transmissions that the post was about, not the engine.
