I quickly looked at this trike yesterday, never noticed it has two engines, must have been quite the ride back in 1899. Bob

Yes probably fast but the front brake pads (I mean pieces of wood) were scary!

I like the long levers for the brakes on the handlebars.

TB and Mallomike, what a great bunch of photos! You make me really want to go to this event next year. TB, I especially like all the close up detail shots. I have a couple questions for you: Who owns these cars? Very rich, or very lucky guys? Are they all really racing full out, or are most of them babying their valuable cars?

I've worked on a few years ago, they are owned by successful people, they race them like they were meant to be raced. When they brake them they fix them. The hobby keeps a lot of people employed. I saw several out on the west coast last weekend, some trucker got them to Lime Rock in record time. Bob

Love this post, west coast vintage racer, my first post here because I race an old foreign car with the engine in the back and its air cooled. Love the variety at vintage events, its whats lacking at modern races.

  11. thanks, i don't know many of the guys, but if i walked into a pit stall any body working/cleaning or watching the cars would take the time to answer questions, open a hood or stand back so i could take a photograph..........regular car guys.
as far as running them, some of the cars were leaning pretty good into the corners, as mentioned i watched a bugatti spin and almost flip. the elva i am crewing for came in with a tire mark on the side of it. remember tho this is a vintage race. the 1913 Bugatti was out with the later Bugattis. competition was amongst cars of the same era. just fun to watch! like going back in time.

LOL a former Connecticut Trooper was part of Paul Newman's crew. If I remember correctly he drove the big car transporter then helped out in the pits. So that is how many of the pranks got accomplished. Mr. Newman was a great guy and a Law Enforcement supporter. Invited all of us to eat with him from his catered meals. He was just like "one of the guys" but got dead serious when is was time to race he really was into it. So many of the local troopers wanted to patrol that area on race days back in the day it got down to short straw wins to determine who the lucky trooper was.

In later years it turned into the best private paid overtime gig we had, got to watch the races and get OT for doing it.

DSCF1083.JPG DSCF1082.JPG DSCF1081.JPG DSCF1081.JPG DSCF1080.JPG The Alden Sherman Type 57C Bugatti, that license plate once belonged to Briggs Cunningham, Alden got it when Briggs moved his collection to California. I believe Alden is the only 100 year old Bugatti owner so they let him lead the tour of the track on Saturday.

This one must have been tough to categorize! Body, a cross between a VW Beetle a Blue Train Bentley. Chassis and wheels like an Indy "roadster". Potvin-type blower arrangement like a Blower Bentley, MG K3, vintage dragster, or Bocar sports-racer. Lots of creativity here!
