Actually, the 'pilled up' salt is the pressure ridges that form when the salt dries. If you drive 'off course' at SpeedWeek, you find the ridges, am I saying there is not more salt then? No, as we know there was. But I would venture to say this years salt looks just like what was in '64, hard and long.

That's Big Bill Edwards Chevy-powered Ranchero. He worked for Ak Miller Ent. in Pico Rivera in the 70s. I'm not sure where Bill lived.

Jeff - Geez, would you be willing to let me use a few of these in my next history book on Bonneville? It would be such a great aspect to feature photos by another gal. . .

It went to a friend of Ak Mller's,,, the doors were lost, and the roll cage, which wasn't much anyway. But the unique fenders with the turbo exhausts (twin) are there and the windshield still has the Speed Week inspection decals. Yes it moved from Whittier to the Upper Desert, near El Mirge Dry Lake Bed, appropriately.

These picture are awesome! Just a few comments regarding a few cars- the red stude in post #4 and Don Alpenfelds that someone else commented on- I worked with Don's son Bill about 25 years ago in Richmond, CA. One day he said he had a bunch of old tools and odds and ends in his garage that belonged to his dad, and that he was moving and was going to toss them out and that I could have it all if I wanted it. At the time he just said that his dad "worked on cars". Many years later I made the connection due to their unusual last name. I still have the egg scale that I got from Bill and was obviously used by his dad to balance rods. Too bad all that hot rod history and his son was so uninterested! He never mentioned his dad was a LSR racer.
On the #502 lakester in Post #5- pretty sure that is the Ralph Linde car that was built in the SF Bay Area. Linde worked at Lockheed in Sunnyvale while building the car. Later, the car was run as #46 with a D motor and put Jim Yriberry in the 2 Club in 1979 and then run later with an E motor. The car was run at the Muroc Reunion several times and Jim was kind enough to loan the car to Steve Nelson and he and I ran it at Bonneville for several years. Best we ever did with it was 227 on a 231 MPH record.
On edit- see post #50, I see Steve posted a little history of the 502 lakester as well.

Jeff, thanks to your mom for taking these photos and a big thanks to you for posting them. My dad Hans Thomsen knew your dad well and they were in high school together. I used to work at the garage in the early 70s.

The Ranchero is just a bare shell, motor and trans long gone.
