Thanks Jeff, the vivid color on the pictures is amazing, especially the blue on Jack Lufkin's car. I can't imagine how it would have been, to grow up around someone as special as Ak Miller and the crew at his shop !

Wow Jeff, what a treasure trove of magnificent photos. It's like they were shot yesterday. So many interesting tidbits to search out in each one. The snout added to the Devin, similar to the one added to the AC. Then figuring out that that Ak probably borrowed the wheel/tire combo off Buzz's Mustang to run on the front of the Devin. Jack's "sports special" which always reminded me of a lakester with fenders. Keep the cards and letters coming Jeff, you're lighting up lots of lights !!!!!

Those are some amazing shots Jeff, they seem larger than life, maybe because of the players I suppose.
Two things, the red A/SR car in the second photo, never heard of Vinola Pistons, some connection with Venolia I'd guess.
And I'd sure like to hear the story about that 50 ish Caddy with the Enderle injector.

  19. Another great set of photos Jeff. Cabong is right, Ak did borrow the Shelby wheels and Goodyear Blue Streaks off of Dad's Mustang. The tires were not rated for as fast as Ak was running, something around 180, if I remember right. The left front threw off the tread, and smacked Ak on his arm at near top speed. Ak was fine, and amazingly so was the Devin. After we got back home, Ak took the tire to Shelby and told them the tire came apart on the freeway. They gave us a brand new tire. I believe Ak could sell ice to Eskimos!

  20. The guy in Lufkin's car with the orange helmet is Jim Duke. Jim worked at Ak's garage for a while, and crewed for Jack at Bonneville. Jim drove when Jack had one of Ak's small Ford V8's in the car. He set the E/Sports Racing class record at 205 and change. At one point Jack's Kurtis held the record in every Sports Racing class in the SCTA rule book. The records were so far out of reach, and the cars in the class had morphed into streamliners with lights, that SCTA retired the class.

These pics and the ones I saw in Hot Rod magazine are/were surreal to me. As Druss mentioned, the landscape looks the same, but many, if not all of the players have changed. The Nolan White coupe (I hope I remember correctly) in the second photo was always a favorite of mine as it seemed to go Faster every time it ran. There were many others (belly tankers and Stude coupes in particular) that struck a similar cord in the mind of this then , teenaged boy living in the Adirondack region of Upstate N.Y. ,but they All were someone's vision of what it takes to go Fast. Post 'em if you got 'em, Thanks.

In 66 I was part of the 5 airline strike. No work for 6 weeks. Shut down 5 US carriers. Except for military charters. Mostly to Vietnam. Really screwed up travel. Went out at $3.52 an hour. Came back for $4.14. Nothing better to do so I went to my first Speedweek. Shortened because of wet weather. But it had a lasting impression on me. Changed my life. If you have not been. Go.

Just a side note.... Ak always referred to the El Caballo as El Cabong ..... Never said why...

  28. Yep, and he called dad's El Camino "El Cabongo".
And Ak did make a pass in dad's Mustang. He and dad were trying to figure out why it fell flat in high gear. Pulled like crazy through the gears, then hit a wall in 4th. After Ak's pass they concurred that it was over cammed. Isky had given dad the latest SBF cam grind, and it was more RPM than torque. The car wouldn't run above 150. They called Isky and he put another cam on the Greyhound to Wendover. Ak and dad worked a whole day swapping the cam. Late in the afternoon we put the car in line, and dad qualified for a record attempt the next morning. He ran 166. Damn, this thread is bringing back memories!
