Projects Almost Funny - AWB Barracuda Funny Car Build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by squirrel, Nov 27, 2017.

  1. Lets not forget a little detail like being broken down on the side of the road at 1am and your trailer is 500 miles away. There is no getting towed back to the pits and your trailer is right there ready to load up and go home. Mcguiver mode kicks in and you somehow fix it. You have no choice.

Brian is 110 percent right, It's a bad feeling at midnight, broken in the middle of nowhere, no one around, pouring rain and lightning or you get into an accident, or a myriad of other thing's, but it's still a super fun week and I can't wait to do it again. To me,If you make it to the first track on the last day ,under power, you are a winner.;):)

  3. At Bonneville, you know if you met your goal as soon as the run ends. At drag week you don't have a measure of your success until the end of the week.

it's a wild ride, that's for sure. I've been pretty lucky and only had one serious "oh shit!" moment, when the blower seized in 2015. thanks to HAMB guys, we got it going and I finished and won my class.

The transmission is together and in the car, and I set the crank in the block, and set the heads on it, intake, blower, etc, to see how things fit. First time it's really been all together. Fortunately, only a few surprises so far about things interfering with other things (that were test fit at different times previously).

Jim, your car is looking awesome! I cannot wait to see it moving under its own power.

  14. I like the extra protection that's been added around the gas tank.

thanks for the tip. The rule book is actually kind of clear about it, I guess I missed it earlier....1.25" tubing, thin chrome moly or thicker mild steel cage, is required when the tank is outside of the frame. I used chrome moly.

Squirrel, you've got an insane amount of work done in a very short time. It goes to your knowledge and planning. I can see the finish line. Good luck and I know you will have fun. Thanks for letting us follow along.

i was sitting at a light one time and ivo's rig came up beside me. what a shock at first.

  24. Jim is actually building the car in the way they did back in the day time wise. Most cars in that era were built in six months or less usually during the off season. The big name drivers always had the latest model.

I'm spending way too much time on it, compared to how they did it back then, though.

  26. True. Your fit and finish is far better than the way most were done. The vast majority were down right crude. They also saved time by not having to make it work on the street. Thats were the true skill of the builder comes into play.

When you've achieved a certain skill level it's hard to drop back to a lessor one.
The time may be more, but I bet the skill on this project is way above what was normal back then

I suspect that most built back then were built by a much bigger team also.

yeah, I'm doing this car almost by myself...with a little help for some things. There is an awful lot to building a car, when you start with a roof and quarter panels! and even that needs a bunch of modification.

Got the throttle linkage and carb end of the fuel lines mostly done. I still need to mount the regulator, and do the return springs. And the floor tunnel is in place, with the shifter sticking through it. I have to make the reverse lockout, it will sit on top of the gate plate.
