I'm in the process of getting the exhaust system built on my '40 Ford and I'm wondering how far to extend the tailpipes. If I remember correctly most of the pictures I've seen show the tailpipes on a '40 extending just past the bumper. If that is correct, can someone tell me how far that is past the edge of the tailpan? I don't have the bumper mounts or the bumper on the car yet so I don't have a visual reference point. Hopefully someone here has already had to answer that question and can help me out. Thanks in advance.

Mine are about 3” past the tailpan and my bumper is about 7” past the tailpan. My bumper has been moved closer to the car by a couple inches

  4. I personally don't like to see them extend past the bumper, but that's just me. I had my exhaust guy extend them just past the pan and add these chrome turn-downs.:) 20160823_184355.jpg 20170917_072156.jpg

IMG_8878.JPG My pencil tips are just even with the curve of the bumper when viewed from the top. This photo makes them look longer than they are because of the camera angle. I don't want black exhaust on the inside of my bumper.
    Bumper is in stock location.

Thanks to all of you who responded, I know where I'm heading now. Once again the HAMB proves it's worth!

    Hey Guys,
The two inserted photo samples were almost the exact copies and set ups on our 40 sedan delivery family history. My first 40 sedan delivery in high school had two pipes just short of the bumper with a chrome tip similar to M's photos. Then over the years that I owned that sedan delivery, I told myself that despite anything I do to the engine, exhaust residue still got on the rear bumper.

It was the way the wind swirled over the top of the sedan delivery rear door panel and made a strange pattern behind that large rear door. Early in the morning, upon firing up the motor, the exhaust smoke and mist patterns were obvious. It blew onto the bumper at first, but just encased the whole rear door panel just sitting in the enclosed driveway. It even did the same pattern on the early morning, beach parking areas, too.

So, by the time we got the second 40 sedan delivery 9-10 years later, the 327 V8 gave out the same smoke pattern on the rear door and bumper. We got the final look with the new muffler tips that were the down turned tube ends. (similar to our horizontal, sideways facing, Harley Sportster exhaust tips. The sedan delivery: curved down with an slight angle cut) The tips, similar to L's 40 coupe, fit perfectly and had the same effect on the route of the exhaust leaving the motor, down and out.

My wife used to tell me that when she would see me accelerate away in the 327 version of the sedan delivery in the early morning or fog, it looked like a JATO exhaust from those early, quick rising, military jets.
