Customs Another bellybutton shoebox

Well I'm going to give this build thread another try. I'm horrible a making updates and most of the time my projects are slow or stall. This car will be a no frills nothing groundbreaking driver. I bought it for $600 and I plan to keep it a low buck reliable car I can beat on and not feel too bad about it. I'm at work right now so there will be a few posts tonight when I can, on breaks and such to get this started! Here are some pics of when I got it and how it looks now. Why do people insist on removing the side trim from these cars? They need it to counter the "slab-sidedness" of the basic design. If you take it off, at least replace it with a Buick spear or maybe some '55 Pontiac stuff, but don't leave them naked.

Now that my rant is over, it looks like a good start.

 

Cool project.

 

Enjoy your project. Often if the side trim is battered and bruised and there is no spare cash for new stuff ,removal is the only option.

Mine on my '51 was pretty battered and I attempted to straighten it. So far so good, no pictures yet but with a U-Tube tutorial I am attempting it. My only real issue is where they drilled it to re-attach it with sheet metal screws and getting the holed TIG welded closed. While it will not be perfect it will be there.

Got the water pump changed out on my 48 tudor today, so work on the 49 can get to moving along again soon. Mowing will take the whole day tomorrow then Thursday I can head back to the shop.

Well the 48 is out of the shop and back on the road. I took today and cleaned the shop and reorganized everything. Feels sooo good to have just one car in there and have everything where its should be! Helps motivation a ton!! Heres a few pics from today. Engine and trans are out for firewall fabrication.

It's super solid! The floors are very nice!! Needs outer rockers and front fender patches. But that's all easy stuff so I'm not upset!! Haha!

Tubman: I had to pull it all off my 50 cause I got tired of the ragged old stuff snagging my pants every time I walked by.

 

Win, I suppose this is an example of the classic design principle : "Form follows function".

 

Heres a tip...you have a great shop,large too. But if you make it bigger you will have less grass to cut and then spend more time in the shop. Seriously love your shoebox. I have had many. This one I have now was sectioned so less side height slab so no side trim required IMO.

 

Since we're off on a trim tangent, how about this? I've seen several of these 49-50 tudor or coupe cars where the side trim started with the short piece at the rear of the door, then ran on back to the end of the body. Seen it on more than one car, doesn't look bad. Wasn't ever factory was it?

 

I know 55 chevy Bellaire trim is popular to run like that. Look at weesners shoebox.

I've been telling the woman that!!! She likes grass and a yard for some dumb reason! Haha!! Thank you! This is my second box. I had a chopped 51 I drove daily when I was 18-21. I'll post a couple pics of it later.

The original reason for buying the 49 was to try and replicate my old 51 I drive daily when I was younger. My dad and I chopped it in his driveway. It was nothing special. Just dropped uprights, cut coils, and lowering blocks. But once I got the car I fell in love with its beat up body. I cant bring myself to chop it. I have my 46 to scratch the custom itch!! Heres some pics of my first shoebox.

Since you no longer own that chopped '51, I feel I can say this. There was another shoebox on here recently that also had a '55 Dodge grille. That one didn't have the extra Dodge sheet metal piece in the middle, which I think is a much cleaner look.

 

So the belly button shoebox. Is it going to be an Inny or Outty ? I prefer the ever so slight Inny. Haha. That's my smart assed comment for the day.

This will be a great car. Nice job so far. I dig the plans. Shoeboxes make great family cruisers.
