The tailgate that said "Originator of modern pinstriping" went for 130K. His meat grinder painting (Good-Bye Cruel World) pulled in 100K, and "Self Portrait" nabbed 80K. Don't forget to tack on and additional 15 percent for auction fees, plus California sales tax. Fantastic aution. Amazing work. Happy Hoppy and I had a blast.

  6. Actually the final price was $310,500 - all the results are on RM Auctions' site.

Didn't look that expensive when I was shooting it at the preview!

It won't be trading hands for a very long time.

There were 2 guys bidding against each other driving the price way up. One I didn't know looked european and was waring rich guy shoes. The other was with Moriarity from the HAMB. Both fellas bought a ton of stuff. Can't remember which one won out on the box. I had heard one was planning to open a museum, but I can not confirm it or the potential museum's location.

The museum is called THE FLYING A GARAGE. It will be opening next year in Winnemucca NV. Roth cars & trikes, alexander brothers cars, Barris cars, the la jolla, fuck the list goes on and on. Believe me the box is in good hands.

  16. Good to know it will be regarded (and shown). I thought for a moment that it was sold to Bruce Meyer, my chauffeur.

You know he died poor and thought commercialism sucked. He is probably laughing at the fools from his grave.

always cool to hang with ya Coby.

  22. Well said, but you might have missed that it was also his father's box before he handed it down to Dutch and he was a well know sign painter in his own time.

  23. so is there another box?
seems that this is in good shape and has hardly any slobber on it ... could it be a replacement unit
is this box traceable to all his pinstriping jobs .. you know any eye witnesess saying" it was there when he did my car"???????

  24. Alot of money, yes! Alot of historical signifcance, absolutely!

Something tells me it will be worth alot more in the future too. I'm just surprised it didn't go to Japan.

i was thinking the same thing, this box looks a little "new" but i could just be ignorant, hahaha. whoever won the box or anything at the auction is a lucky guy to own something special.

I've said it before & I'll say it again: There are too many people in this country with too much money. I don't think a single one of them give a shit about anyone else. There are CHILDREN starving in this country & people are giving $300,000+ for a fucking wooden box??? I don't CARE if it's Von Dutch's box: priorities are ALL fucked up if you ask me!!!

Hey driver, I don't wanna flame ya but THAT sentiment about starving kids really chaps my ass. Typically people with that kinda dough are more charitable than anyone realizes. I worked and dealt with some extremely wealthy folks in my day and have run into many that expell that thought when they're at the shows that these folks go to. Why are they at the shows in the 1st place?

While showing a car once a guy exclaimed angrily about how much was spent on a car we were displaying. "I dare say, wouldn't that pay for a few college educations?!?" "Fuck yeah...it paid for mine!"...was my response. Are they supposed to give it all away? I wouldn't. Just an opposing point of view man.

Is that the Goof that paid the huge money for the '50's GM showcar at the Barrett Jackson auction two years ago?
