2. From Phil Elliott:"It might be Lloyd Clemons? That C/A designation says this can be no newer that '62, because all flatheads/inlines headed for D/A the next year. Love it. No idea of the photographer."

It's Lloyd, he follows on here. In the early 60's, a blower jumped you up one class. Lloyd teamed up with Wayne Harry, and the 4-71 blown Flathead resided in Wayne's Willys PU for while. I will send him the link and see if he will respond with details, he is a good friend.

Yes, that's me and my screaming little blown flathead. This picture would have been taken at Puyallup probably 60 or 61, probably by my mother or my brother.
That flathead was only 273 cu in, sporting a chain driven 4-71 blower running at 25% overdriven and four Stromberg 97's with huge jets. Those rear tires are not the slicks I normally ran. I ran a 900/16 M & H, a 4.88 gear, shifted at 7000 and, for some reason, it lived.

Thanks for all the updates on the King car...I had not seen this later version...looks very much like a Pontiac 4...so here is my guess: Ron Benham ran a Pontiac 4 in his Bonneville roadster (Tempest in a T-Pot)...I think that Ron and the King team were friends...so my guess is that this latest engine in Midnight Oil is Ron's....

Looks like the right bank of an Olds engine here.

Pontiac 4 perhaps? I do know the Hisso was available and popular up until at least the late 50's-early 60's in track racing. AND it powered several WW1 aircraft. THAT is all I know!
Thanks to all for the info and added updates on the Midnite Oil car. In the early shot I could only guess that it was some sort of exotic OHC engine. Would have taken me a while to figure it was half of a Hispano-Suizo V8. In the later shots I'd have to go with the Pontiac Trophy 4 as it was at least a production engine for a few years. Seem to recall that Mickey Thompson dabbled with those engines a bit as well.
I guess that I am just getting old. HAMB member 4 port Riley confirmed that it was a Pontiac back in 2015 in this very thread. When I saw the valve cover it just did not look Pontiac for some reason (stupidity maybe).

Regarding the Stone & Woods item a few pages ago – If my memory serves me (not often), I recollect seeing two SWC cars at a pancake house in Bakersfield before an early Smokers meet. Seems one had the Olds and the other a Chrysler(?).

  16. You are absolutely correct. The original Swindler II, Tim Wood's first Willys, remained Olds powered, and became Swindler B, when a smaller Olds replaced the big stroker Olds. Swindler A was a brand new build, and was always Chrysler powered. At the '63 Winternationals, both cars won their classes, and went into street eliminator. Cookie was busier than a one armed wallpaper hanger driving both cars in eliminations.

A lot of racers just drove their cars to the track and competed in the gas coupe/sedan or street roadster classes. This '34 has slicks and a number on the window, but otherwise is street-legal. Photo by Norm Grudem.
