  5. The "Hisso" engine was one bank of the V-8 Hispano-Suiza aircraft engine used in WWI, and became popular in the U.S., some used in sprint cars in the 1920-30s (I think). Ron Benham and Paul Aicher also used one in a car similar to Vic King's Midnight Oil, which has been restored. I don't know much about the origins of King's car, though the design is unusual to say the least.[/QUOTE]

Pontiac 4 perhaps? I do know the Hisso was available and popular up until at least the late 50's-early 60's in track racing. AND it powered several WW1 aircraft. THAT is all I know!

Terry and Bernie before the dragsters, first top gas and then fuellers. The Canadian based team won T/F at Indy in 1980. the last year for the 32 car field.

Duane Reynolds far side, the Coleman Bros Speed Shop, after he moved to the Northwest, from Maryland. I restored the car in 2002.

John's second Fuller car, his first 50 runs were with the Chevy, and then he installed a Keith Black 331 Chrysler. This is how it looked when we bought it, after 16 years stored in his basement. 2012-09-14 163930.jpg

  16. The Fuel Cuda. NOT a popular car in it's day, it was Dave Grassi's dragster with a 66 Cuda glass body. The car was booed and pelted with beer cans in it's first appearance! Regarded as not a real funny car.

  22. Larry Hendrickson's Gladiator, one of the many outstanding AA/FD's in the NW, held the NHRA record at 232 mph, first in the 230's I believe.

Thanks to all for the info and added updates on the Midnite Oil car. In the early shot I could only guess that it was some sort of exotic OHC engine. Would have taken me a while to figure it was half of a Hispano-Suizo V8. In the later shots I'd have to go with the Pontiac Trophy 4 as it was at least a production engine for a few years. Seem to recall that Mickey Thompson dabbled with those engines a bit as well.

  24. Here's a Hispano-Suizo V8. Don't know if it's the one in the car ( if it is one), but these were war surplus after WW1, lot's to be had from aviation overhaulers.
