    He's compressing the valve spring so he can remove the clip from the slot and pull the valve and guide out. He's using what we used to call a "pickle fork".

    He is pushing the valve guides down so he can install the valve guide retainer clips. The engine seems the have a factory relief and has a fresh bore. In the day I rebuilt many flatheads and almost never could use that kind of valve bar to get the guide/valve spring out. 8BA's were easier as you could remove the valve keepers and then the valve and spring and then drive the guide out.
    59's and earlier were a pain even with special tools and sometimes A BFH hammer and cold chisel was used tobrake the stem and borrof of the guide off.
