Hello, EL CAMINOS of all years are part of our So Cal history. We lusted after a 59 El Camino with a 335 HP, 348, 4 speed version, since that was the one usually winning the trophies at Lions Dragstrip against our 58 280 HP Impala. (Those 59 El Caminos and a black 59 Impala hardtop) It was hard to make up 55 HP with just about everything else equal. The red 65 El Camino was my first, real, NEW car that I was able to sit down at the dealer and order it to my specs. (327, 4 barrel, auto trans, Positraction, heavy duty radiator, shocks, springs, stabilizer bar, tinted windows,outside mirror,etc. and an AM/FM radio.) I had a heavy duty undercoating sprayed on a week later at a specialty shop after delivery, added a custom air gauge to the air shocks inlet, got Redline, wide, Inglewood Pos A Traction tires, two super high beam head lights and added two 6x9 speakers in sound boxes behind the seat. That was all necessary stuff for empty desert and beach activities. This must have been built on a Wednesday in the Fremont GM plant as it drove 125k miles until 1973 with only a new battery and water pump for problems. It gave us 15-17 mpg and no oil burning for the whole time until sold to a local surfer. The last time I saw it was in 1977 cruising down PCH toward Laguna Beach. Where is it today? Is it still red? It was 53 years of memories since I bought our 65 red Chevy El Camino at the local, downtown Long Beach, CA Chevy dealer. The 125k miles were all up and down the coast of California, Cal-Nevada deserts, Baja Mexico and just plenty of miles, going locally to concerts, the beach, and events. It was also our reliable honeymoon transportation to and from Coastal, Northern Cal, Eastern Cal, and back to So Cal on a last extended, care free, summer vacation. vnak photo With the Positraction, Inglewood tires and air shocks, we never got stuck in the deep sand at the Mojave Desert, Baja beaches, mountain snow, or the local beaches. Jnaki When I saw this Orange 1965 El Camino in a local big box store parking lot, memories started pumping. This mild custom, orange one had some special additions that were obvious, and a couple of nice fairly hidden items not normally seen on 65 El Caminos. The Orange 1965 had a few changes to the stock configuration. The S&S wheels, the 4 speed stick in front of the seats, a custom steering wheel…all added up to a nice daily driver. 4 speeds were available, but not for El Caminos in 65, only Chevelle sedans. Back in late 1964, I tried special ordering a 4 speed, but to no avail. Something caught my eye as I was quickly shooting photos. On the outside front fender, a 350 emblem resides over the normal 327 or 283 emblem. So, there must be some mods inside of the motor compartment. The two V8 varieties in 1965 were the 283 and 327. There was no 350 as an option in the El Camino line. But, the attached emblem was nicely done on the stock flags. Could the original motor now be replaced by a 350 C.I. version? There was a 350 HP option in the Chevelle line but, that was not available to the El Camino until 1966. By 1969 the El Camino used a 350 CI motor. The 1965 El Camino was a good handling, comfortable, mid size car/truck (125k worth of California/Nevada/Baja miles gave us a great experience, even without a/c, as it told us so…) We had our air vents, wind wings turned inward, and wireback seat rests for that custom cooling on hot drives… There is no comparison of the El Camino to the newer GMC big truck. For us, today, it would be a pleasure to drive the 65 El Camino and not that huge road hog of a truck on daily drives. Even for us old peeps, the 4 speed would be lots of fun.

How about four in a row.......all at the same show?? Pick your style. There was a fifth one that showed up later, but I didn't get a picture of all five together. (I thought these were "rare" cars?)
My 64! Its kind of a take on how a nastruck would have looked back in 64 if they had the series. It runs a 406 SBC, t56 BOX, ford 9" with a true track 4:11 diff , full HOWE front suspension and spindels, Wide Five wheels and wilwood sprint car brakes. the Coil overs and brake calipers are not period corrcet as they are new The rest is time period.
Kool profile... I hadn't seen a El Camino with Lincoln wheel covers. I'd like to see more of this one..
I should have bought a 60 model not the 64.... but thats all hindsight.. Or maybe i should ALSO buy a 60 as a better mantra than what i did not do in the past
