is there another series of numbers/letters stamped on the block? that looks like most of a partial VIN...from the 1970s, possibly.

we expect to see something like F0514CMD

It's in my neighbors trailor, I will have to check later. He does own a 62 corvette that the engine was part of the deal when he bought it.

Corvettes were mostly the only Chevys that had a partial VIN stamped on the block in the 60s.

I might ask to check the vin on his vette. It might be the original 327 from it.

Well, if it is, you'll be blessed to have one of the few "327 Vette" engines that actually is!! :D

Last 3 digits of the heads should be 461 for '62. 61-63 there was a 461x head that had large 170cc intake runners. The x will be cast on the underside... 100_1101.jpg

Back in the mid/late '60s I worked in a Chevy/Buick dealership. The 300hp 327 was my favorite SBC. Still would be for carbureted traditional engines....it was smooth and pulled very well.

I checked out a few other numbers on the engine and some of the components.
Valve covers are original 7 fin corvette, marked Lester 3767493
Heads are 461 no x marking 160 intake and 62 exhaust matching

It turns over freely and the valves look to be doing the correct movement.
I don't care if corvette or not it's still a fine vintage engine.

Thanks for all your help guys.

if you find the casting dates on the heads and block, you can get a little more info about the engine.

Look for letter/number sequences like A 3 5, or similar. First letter is the month (A=Jan, B=Feb, etc), second is the day of the month, third is the last digit of the year (5=1965 or 1955 or 1975)

my guess was off by two days :)

the heads will have date codes too, see if they are close to the block, if so they're probably original to it. If not, they are not.
