Projects Progress on Rocky's 34 coupe..last update 9/30/2020

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rocky, Jan 12, 2009.

  1. 34scotty.jpg 34scotty1.jpg Drove the 34 out of my garage this morning under it's own power. Seems to have a vacuum leak, clutch squeals and doesn't disengage fully, intake manifold leaks water and carb leaks. I pray I didn't totally fuck up and install the clutch disc backwards. Gotta yank the radiator, hood, engine/trans etc to get at the clutch and time is quickly getting away from me! Photo is my brother, Scotty installing new valve cover gaskets this afternoon.

Looking good and apart from the few minor issues I am sure all will work well.

  6. Got the screaming clutch problem scienced out and repaired this afternoon after work...seems the flywheel mounting bolts I used were from a GMC and had really thick heads. When the clutch was disengaged, the high bolt heads came in contact with the springs in the clutch disc. luckily I stopped the engine before anything got hurt. I "machined" the bolt heads down and reassembled the clutch .....took this opportunity to do a super close shifter adjustment so the Hurst operates like butta. Will put the rest of it together tomorrow. 34clutchjob.jpg 34clutchjob1.jpg

Rocky, lookin great man. Cool Scotty was here to help. I saw that you were at Mark Ervin (Jigger) art show. Had plans to go but had a pacemaker installed to keep my motor running right. We need to have another breakfast soon.

Rocky, good job scoping out the problem and better job making the fix. Did the machining of the bolt heads per chance involve a grinding wheel/stone? I hope so. I love it when someone uses the simple solution.

That clutch thing had me nervous. Glad you got it licked.

See you in two weeks, -Abone.

  14. Working on changing the intake manifold gaskets now....on hold at NAPA while posting....clutch repair was a rousing success! And the tranny actually slid right in place with no drama.

  15. Mike....machining the bolt heads involved a 1/2 inch fine threaded nut clamped in my vice with the bolt screwed into it , a fresh grinding wheel in my 4" grinder and a vernier caliper.....025" bolt head thickness on all 6 of them.

  16. Paint! Ok, it's epoxy primer but it's close enough. Scotty was a huge help today. Behold................My afb is giving me fits so I bought a kit for my trusty Holley 650 double pumper...will rebuild it tomorrow. 34paint.jpg 34paint1.jpg

  30. Bet it was hard to put back in the garage when it got dark; bet you wish the lights were mounted so you could have kept going.

It has been great watching this come together in real time; surprised when I looked back and saw the thread started in '09. Thanks for sharing.
