picked this up at a swap meet today. It's missing the nut to hold the cover on but I think I can fab one up. Does anyone know anything about it? Brand? What element does it take? thanks

It's a Filcoolator. It takes the same cartridge as a stock flathead oil filter.

Can't tell from the photos if the top has the spring that goes between the filter cartridge and the top like a stock unit. My guess is that it needs one. I've got a junk stock filter cartridge with the top bolt and spring you can have if you think they would work on the filter.

On the stock filters that I looked at the top bolt screws "into" the tube coming up through the filter and mine the top bolt is 1/2" fine thread and screws "onto" the tube

I think I have seen reproduction filcoolator decal that go on lid on evilbay before. I believe that originals are cast and reproductions like Speedway sells are machined finish.

Under the big spring right at the top there are four holes that you can’t really see that also allow oil to pass through from The inside . On the inside of the cap there is the thread to allow it to screw onto the Center of the body and also another small spring , I’m guessing this spring is there to keep the cap under tension and stop it vibrating loose . There is also the big main cup that keeps the oil filter in place and under tension inside the casing

Hope that makes sense , any questions ask away I’ll try and answer them the best I can

I see, it is a little more complicated than just a wing nut.

Can you post a pic of the top bolt and spring you have?

It looks like the washer part is pressed onto the the threaded thing that sticks out the top sandwiching the spring between the top and the washer. I see speedway sells a repop of this filter. I wonder if the top parts are the same as mine. Anyone have a speedway repop they could take the cover off and post a couple pics of the inside? Thanks
