    Hello,

In the early years of Bonneville, the cars looked like drag race cars with a little bit of streamlining here and there, as well as being lower to the ground. The race car would essentially be the same with a few safety mods as per the rules. add in gearing, tuning, new wheels, smoother tires, etc...all playing their part of a high speed endeavor.

So, in thinking about the top drag race cars of the times, wouldn’t the drag racing, record setting, roadster of Tony Waters from the Bakersfield Smokers be a top racer at Bonneville? He did it before, but couldn’t this record setting top drag race car do it again? Even with the Smokers famous purple color and all?

The roadster seemed to sit a little high for racing, but the speeds and quickness never slowed this car down, even against the top FEDs of the day. Again, from 1960-90, our family discussions about drag racing cars at Bonneville popped up during the summer months, with the anticipation of the upcoming August Bonneville Speed Week. This purple flash roadster was always one we would have liked to see racing in Utah.

A lowered chassis to cut down on resistance, streamlined Moon Discs or Titanium spun wheels would be added. A stock cockpit cover or an aluminum streamlined cover to keep the air flowing back. The motor was already hidden away with the 671 in front of the DeSoto Hemi.

"In 1956 Chuck Edwards teamed up with Tony Waters, Jim Sughrue and Jerry Smith to build this 1932 Ford Roadster. The car raced for two years at Bonneville running 192.30 mph in 1957 and 203.04 mph in 1958. Driving this D Class roadster in 1958, Tony Waters was the first person to do 200 mph in a roadster." 23. I was off to a great start today. I hopped in the 32 to run an errand and the clutch slave failed. I limped home and got the new spare I carry and installed it. I think the bad part of the day is over. :) Thanks for a great start on the FAS, guys. :)
