Technical 1932 Ford 5w coupe roof insert...How I did it.

Nice job. Back in the 80's we did a '34 sedan and that's how it was recommended at the time. I think we used 2x3s, though.

Yeh, the 3w is different. The United Pacific is $400...much cheaper than an original and I've heard they are good quality too.

Sorry, I don't know anything about the aluminum pieces. Maybe timwhit or someone else will see this and reply. I would check places like Macs... I'm sure shaping them to fit is a pretty trick process. Unfortunately, the originals are basically impossible to find. LeBaron Bonney is who you want for materials for original style insert. I JUST finished this a couple days ago and made the video...But, yes I'm sure there will be wind noise. It's just a necessary evil if you want the original style.

It was great, almost as cool as the car! I saved it, I'm still on the fence on cloth insert, which I like the looks better, or solid metal.

 

I don't notice any noise with my insert, but my wife says I don't notice any kind of noise.

Great Video. I have done several and take a little different approach. Instead of chicken wire I use 1/8 inch waterproof tempered Masonite cut to fit the hole and screwed to the wood with countersunk flat head screws. Some times you have to sand the edges a little for the right fit. I then cover the Masonite with the thin 1/8 inch high density black vinyl top foam glued down. From there on I do it like you using a wooden frame to stretch the top material ( I am alone) which I glue to the foam. After I tack the material down and trim it I use a non hardening black sealer under the metal tack strip to seal out the water then insert the rubber seal. When done it's not any thicker than a stock top insert. I started doing it this way because it allows me to put Dynamat on the roof for a little more sound deadening.

 

That's really smart to be able to dynamat it...I bet that does help. I thought about sealer, but kinda halfway hated to do anything yet in case I decided to paint my tack strip...I guess I fear commitment, ha! Obviously my car isn't a "finished" kinda car, but sealing it up would definitely be something I'd worry about if I had fresh upholstery... I bet a lot of guys ended up welding a roof insert in over the years because they were afraid of leaks.

 

Question: did you have the original "tack strip" channel and wood to work with? 34 is different than 32, and nobody makes repro strip for 34....so I plan just make from thin waterproof ply or luan wood so I have something to staple to. Suggestions welcome.

 

My tack strips have always been painted before I install them. I've had quite a number of deuces with top inserts and have never had a water leak to date.
